IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram illustrates various steps of manufacturing fabric from bamboo. There are nine essential steps to manufacture fabric from bamboo.

Initially, bamboo plants are planted in the Spring season. In Autumn season, bamboo is able to harvest. So, a man harvest bamboo. Additionally, bamboo is sent to cut into strips. After that, to make liquid plup, strips are crushed. In next step, the liquid is sent to a filter where long fibers are separated from liquid.

Furthermore, in the sixth stage, water and amine oxide is added to convert the filtered long fibers into soften fibers. In addition, soften fibers are collected in a form of spin to make yarn from it. Moreover, the spin is used to weave for the production of numerous fabric such as socks, shirts and other things. Ultimately, the fabric that is produced from bamboo is ready to go to markets fol sale.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the process as having nine stages and report most of its main sequence, from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram shows the fibres being softened with water and amine oxide, not explicitly “converted,” and the final stage depicts clothing rather than stating that the fabric is ready for sale. The overview is also limited; a stronger response would summarise the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments and distinguish the preparation of fibres from the final textile-making stages. The response is one word below the required minimum, and several stages are only briefly described, so the task is addressed partially rather than fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and paragraphing separates the early processing from the later stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After that,” “Furthermore” and “Ultimately” help the reader follow the process. However, the repeated use of additive transitions (“Additionally,” “Furthermore,” “In addition,” “Moreover”) can feel mechanical, and some links between steps are not precise. For example, “the liquid is sent to a filter” is unclear because the diagram indicates that filtering separates long fibres from the liquid. Organise the account into clearer phases and use transitions that show sequence or result, rather than adding a connector to nearly every sentence. This would make the progression more natural and references easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “filter,” “fibers,” “yarn” and “weave,” which allows the reader to understand the general subject. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “liquid plup” is misspelled, “bamboo is able to harvest” is not a natural expression, and “collected in a form of spin” does not clearly describe spinning fibres into yarn. “Numerous fabric” is also imprecise for the products shown. Aim for accurate process verbs and natural collocations, and check spelling and word forms. This would make the description more precise without requiring unnecessarily advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and some attempts at more complex structures, such as “In the sixth stage, water and amine oxide is added to convert…” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “In Autumn season, bamboo is able to harvest” has an incorrect passive construction; “a man harvest bamboo” has subject–verb agreement and tense problems; and “water and amine oxide is added” requires plural agreement. Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “in a form of spin” and “numerous fabric.” Use consistent present simple passive forms for a process description, and check agreement and articles. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the range already attempted.
