IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram shows the manufacturing process of fabric from a bamboo. Overall, it can be seen that the bamboo fabric is made in 9 steps after passing through a series of processes from plating a bamboo till the last step of making socks and shirts etc.
First, In spring season bamboo plants are planted and then harvested in autumn season. The harvested bamboo is then cut into strips after passing through a crushing machine to make liquid pulp. The pulp made in fourth step undergoes the process of filtration to separate the long fibres from liquid. After filtration, the fibres are made soften by the addition of water and amine oxide to it.
The fibre then made in sixth step is spun to make yarn from it. The yarn made by spinning of fibres is weaven to make different types of fabric from it. The fabric made of fibres can be then used to make a number of products like socks and shirts etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages and give a clear overview that the process has nine steps, beginning with planting and ending with clothing. The seasonal details and the fibre-treatment stages are also reported accurately. However, the sequence is misrepresented when you say the bamboo is cut “after passing through a crushing machine”: cutting comes first, followed by crushing to produce pulp. The final stage is described as making products, but the diagram shows clothing as the outcome after weaving, rather than explicitly showing a separate manufacturing step. To strengthen the report, present the stages in exact order and distinguish the diagram’s stated processes from reasonable inferences about the finished products.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early processing stages and then the conversion of fibres into yarn, fabric and clothing. Sequencing words such as “First,” “then” and “After filtration” help the reader follow the process. However, the incorrect placement of crushing after cutting makes the progression less reliable, and the repeated references to “made in” steps and “from it” create some awkward or unclear links. The overview also combines the nine-step count with the endpoint but does not clearly group the process into cultivation, fibre preparation and textile production. Use clearer stage groupings and precise references to each material as it changes form.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” “fibres,” “spun” and “yarn.” These terms make the manufacturing stages understandable, and the use of “amine oxide” accurately reflects the diagram. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “plating a bamboo” does not describe planting, “made soften” is not idiomatic, and “weaven” is an incorrect form. “A bamboo” is also an unsuitable expression for the material in this context. Aim for precise process verbs and natural collocations, such as “the fibres are softened” and “the yarn is woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including passive constructions such as “are planted,” “is then cut” and “are made soften.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “a bamboo” uses an unnecessary article, “the fibres are made soften” has an incorrect construction, and “The fibre then made in sixth step” is missing a finite verb and an article. Capitalisation after “First,” and spacing after the full stop in “liquid pulp. The” also need attention. Practise accurate passive forms and article use, and proofread sentence boundaries; this would make the process description more consistently controlled.
