IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the step-by-step procedure involved in the production of fabric made from the bamboo.
Overall, entire process consist of nine main stages. It begins with the collection of bamboo plants and ends with the delivery of the finished product of consumers.
In the first stage, in the spring time workers plants the bamboos and harvest that all bamboos plant in the autumn season. Next, all bamboos plants transport direct into the processing factory. After this step, all the bamboos cut into strips and crush that all strips to make liquid pulp.
In the following stage, that liquid pulp filter in machine and separate long fibers from liquid. After that, they add water and amine oxide in fibers to make soften. Once it become a soften, that fibers converted into the yarn. Then after, with the help of yarn make a weave fabric. Finally with the help of the fabric they can make various clothes which are ready for sell in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main stages in the correct general order, from planting and harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving, and you provide an overview identifying the beginning and end of the process. The description of crushing, filtering and softening also includes relevant details from the diagram. However, the overview says the process ends with “delivery” to consumers, which is not shown; the final stage depicts clothing items made from the fabric. The claim that bamboo is transported to a factory is also not stated in the visual. Some stages are less fully explained, particularly the final production of clothing. To strengthen the response, keep every detail tied to the diagram and make the overview accurately identify the finished garments as the endpoint.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by the stages in sequence, with a new paragraph for the later processing steps. Sequencing expressions such as “In the first stage,” “Next,” “After this step,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. The progression is generally logical, though some links feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “After this step” does not specify the transition as precisely as it could, and “Once it become a soften” makes the connection between softening and spinning difficult to follow. Use a wider range of clear process links and ensure references such as “that liquid pulp” and “that fibers” have unambiguous grammatical forms. This would make the cohesion smoother and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibers,” “yarn,” and “weave,” which allows the reader to understand the stages. There is also some useful task-specific language, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “collection of bamboo plants” does not describe planting, “delivery of the finished product of consumers” is not supported by the diagram, and “make a weave fabric” is awkward. Repetition of “all bamboos plants” and “with the help of” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise process verbs and natural combinations, such as “bamboo is harvested,” “the fibres are spun into yarn,” and “the yarn is woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is usually understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur often enough to make some parts awkward. For example, “workers plants” should be “workers plant,” while “all bamboos cut into strips” needs a passive form such as “the bamboo is cut into strips.” In “that liquid pulp filter in machine,” the verb and article are missing or incorrect. The sentence “Once it become a soften, that fibers converted into the yarn” contains several problems with agreement and verb forms. Practise accurate passive constructions, which are especially useful for process descriptions, and check subject–verb agreement and articles. Greater control of these patterns would make your meaning clearer.
