IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given image illustrates process of creating fabric using bamboo. The process is shown in 9 steps.
In first step bamboo plants is planted in spring, after that it is harvested in autumn. When bamboo plants are harvested it is cut into strips and the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. After the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp it is forwarded to next process which is filtering. The filtering process is done to separate long fibers from liquid.
After half of the process is completed the sixth process is about how to soften fibers by adding water and amine oxide, when the fiber becomes soft it is rolled to make yarn and weaved to make fabric. When the process of making fabric is completed it is used to make different types of clothes such as shirt, shock etc.
Overall, the image describes the process of creating fabric with the help of bamboo and turning it into clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence of nine stages and include several key details, such as planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering the liquid, and adding water and amine oxide. You also report the final use of the material for clothing. However, the overview mainly repeats the topic rather than summarising the process’s main phases, and some stages are unclear or inaccurately described: the diagram shows fibres being spun into yarn, not “rolled,” and then woven into fabric. The final clothing stage could also be stated more precisely. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the progression from seasonal cultivation through fibre processing to finished garments, then describe each stage accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows the general order of the diagram, and the paragraph break helps separate the early processing stages from the later ones. Linking phrases such as “after that,” “when,” and “after half of the process” show an effort to connect events. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, with repeated “after” constructions, and the second paragraph’s opening, “After half of the process is completed,” is an imprecise transition rather than a clear link to the filtering stage. The overview is placed at the end, so the reader does not receive a clear summary before the details. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and logically grouped process stages, using concise links that clarify sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtering,” and “fibers,” so the reader can generally follow the stages. However, some word choices are imprecise or repetitive: “creating fabric” and “process” recur, while “rolled to make yarn” does not accurately describe spinning. “Shock” is an incorrect word for “sock,” and “different types of clothes” is less precise than the diagram’s finished clothing items. Aim for accurate process collocations such as “spin the fibres into yarn” and “weave the yarn into fabric.” Vary repeated wording with suitable alternatives, but prioritise precision over using more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “When” and “After,” and the sequence is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement and articles occur in basic descriptions: “bamboo plants is planted” should be “bamboo plants are planted,” or “bamboo is planted,” and “illustrates process” needs an article (“illustrates the process”). Some sentence structures are awkward, particularly “After the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp it is forwarded to next process,” where the reference of “it” is unclear and articles are missing. The response also relies heavily on long sentences joined by clauses. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and clear pronoun reference, and use full stops to separate stages when needed.
