IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given illustration visually describes the process of making clothes. The whole process take nine steps, starting from planting bamboo and process it to make yarn, and than eventually make desired products.
Overall, the process starts in Spring by planting the bamboo. After harvesting it in Autumn it is processed through a number of steps to make the fibers which are than soften using chemicals. Fibers than take the shape of a yarn which is weaved into a fabric.
Firstly, bamboo plants are panted in spring and than harvested in Autumn. They are than cut into the stripes in the third step. The strips are than crushed into a liquid pulp. To remove the long fibers from the pulp, it is than filtered and than treated with a chemical called amine oxide along with water.
This chemical treatment soften the long fibers that were spearated by filtration. The soften fibers are than spun to make a yarn. Yarn is than used to make fabirc after it has been woven. With this fabirc any desired attire could be made.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You give a clear account of the process, including its seasonal beginning, the conversion of bamboo into pulp and fibres, and the final production of fabric and clothing. The overview identifies the main stages, and details such as filtering out long fibres and softening them with water and amine oxide are accurately reported. This covers the task well, although some features are less fully described: the final step is clothing items, but “any desired attire” is a broad inference rather than a specific description of the diagram. You could also make the overview more precise by distinguishing the initial growing and harvesting stages from the later manufacturing stages. The response is relevant and informative, with some scope for fuller, more exact coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by two paragraphs describing the stages. The use of “Firstly” and repeated references to the fibres helps readers follow the process, and the stages are generally presented in the correct order. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical because “than” (intended as “then”) is repeated frequently, and several sentences begin with “The… are then.” The reference in “This chemical treatment” is understandable, but the transition between the filtering and softening stages could be made more direct. Grouping the stages into growing/harvesting, fibre processing, and fabric production would create clearer progression and reduce repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “fibers,” “spun,” and “woven,” which makes the stages understandable. There is also some useful variation in describing the transformation from bamboo to fabric. However, spelling errors and imprecise word choices are noticeable, including “panted,” “stripes” for strips, “spearated,” and “fabirc.” “Desired attire” is also less precise than naming the clothing shown. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and control expected for a stronger performance. Proofread carefully and choose terms that match the diagram exactly; consistent spelling of “fibres” or “fibers” would also improve presentation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “After harvesting it in Autumn” and the purpose clause “To remove the long fibers from the pulp.” Most relationships between stages remain clear. Some grammatical errors persist, however: “The whole process take nine steps” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the fibers which are than soften” has an incorrect verb form and tense. The repeated construction “are than…” also affects several sentences, and “The soften fibers” needs a correctly formed adjective. These errors are generally understandable in context, but they reduce accuracy. Check agreement, past participles, and the distinction between “then” and “than,” and vary sentence patterns more confidently.
