IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given process diagram illustrates all the steps involved in the making of fabric from bamboo.
Overall, it is a nine step process starting all the way from the planting of bamboo plants to weaving the yarn to make clothings. Involving all the agricultural and industrial process resulting in fabric.
Spring is the season in which bamboo plants are planted. Growing throughout summers bamboo plants are ready to be harvested in autumn. Following harvesting, the plants are cut into strips. Strips of bamboo are then crushed to make the liquid pulp. This is done to make it easier to separate long fibres from the liquid through the process of filteration.
Afterwards, the long filtered fibres are soften by the addition of solution of amine oxide and water. These soften fibres are then spun to make yarn. This yarn is then weaved into a fabric.Number of clothing including shirts, socks are made using this fabric

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the main stages accurately, from planting in spring and harvesting in autumn through processing the bamboo, spinning yarn, weaving fabric, and producing clothing. The overview identifies the process as having nine steps and recognises its agricultural and industrial phases, while the body gives a clear account of the sequence. The final clothing stage is also included, which helps complete the description. To make the account more fully developed, state the overall transformation more precisely in the overview—for example, that bamboo is converted into fabric and then garments—and avoid implying that weaving itself makes the clothing. The process is otherwise well selected and grounded in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two chronological body paragraphs. The sequence is easy to follow, with transitions such as “Following harvesting,” “Afterwards,” and “These softened fibres are then spun” guiding the reader through the stages. Paragraphing also separates the initial processing from the later fibre and fabric production. Some links and sentence boundaries are less controlled: “Involving all the agricultural and industrial process resulting in fabric” is a fragment, and “fabric.Number” runs two ideas together. The final sentence would also connect more smoothly if it explicitly stated that the fabric is used to make the listed garments. More consistent sentence-level cohesion would strengthen an otherwise clear progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “pulp,” “fibres,” “filtered,” and “spun,” and these choices make the stages understandable. There is also some flexibility in phrases such as “the addition of” and “separate long fibres from the liquid.” However, several word-form, spelling, and collocation choices reduce precision: “filteration” should be “filtration,” “soften” should be “softened,” and “weaved” is less appropriate here than “woven.” “Clothings” is not normally used as a plural noun, and “solution of amine oxide and water” is awkwardly phrased. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more accurate process collocations and forms would improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the time clause “Growing throughout summers…” and the passive construction “are then spun.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. “Involving all the agricultural and industrial process resulting in fabric” is a sentence fragment, while “These soften fibres are then spun” has an incorrect verb form. The opening overview also joins an incomplete clause to the preceding sentence, and “Number of clothing including shirts, socks are made…” lacks a clear grammatical structure. Punctuation is inconsistent at “fabric.Number.” Aim to make each sentence complete, check agreement and articles, and use passive forms consistently when describing manufacturing stages.
