IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates the manufacturing of fabrics from bamboo. This diagram is representing that bamboo fabric is made from following few steps which are as follows;
Bamboo plants are planted in Spring season which are probably harvested in the season of Autumn. The harvested bamboo plants are then taken into the factories where fabrics are made and there these grown plants are cut into strips.
After that these strips are crushed to make the liquid pulp and then this liquid pulp is filtered to separate the extended fibres from liquid. Afterwards when filtration has been done, sufficient amount of water and amine oxide is added into the liquid pulp to soften the fibres.
At last, these soften fibres are spinned to make yarn which is then weaved to make fabric. For instance, socks, sweaters, shirts, and trench coats etc.
In conclusion, I would rather say that bamboo plants has a lot of advantages in our daily life so we should not consume these plants for useless purposes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You describe the main sequence from planting and harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving, and correctly mention the spring and autumn stages. However, the response does not give a clear overview of the process as a whole, and some details are inaccurate or unsupported. The diagram shows the final products as a T-shirt and socks, not sweaters or trench coats, and it does not say the bamboo is taken to factories. The conclusion about bamboo’s advantages and avoiding “useless purposes” is not shown in the diagram and distracts from the process summary. To strengthen the response, provide a concise overview of the stages and report only details visible in the diagram, including the final clothing stage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The stages are generally presented in a logical order, and linking phrases such as “After that,” “Afterwards,” and “At last” help the reader follow the process. The paragraphing also separates the opening from the description. However, the sequence is mostly delivered as one long block, and the final “In conclusion” introduces an unrelated opinion rather than bringing the process description together. Some links are mechanical, while “when filtration has been done” repeats information already stated. Grouping the stages into clearer paragraphs—for example, cultivation and preparation, then fibre processing and manufacture—and ending with the finished products would make progression and cohesion more effective.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “fibres,” and “yarn,” which allows the main stages to be understood. There is some attempt at more specific language, such as “separate the extended fibres from liquid,” but “extended” is not an appropriate description of the long fibres shown. Several word forms or collocations are inaccurate, including “fabrics” for the material in this context, “spinned,” and “weaved.” The list of clothing also includes items not shown. Aim for precise process terms and check common forms: “fabric,” “spun,” and “woven.” Avoid adding examples that are not supported by the diagram.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and longer sentences with subordinate clauses, such as “The harvested bamboo plants are then taken into the factories where fabrics are made.” This shows some range, and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, errors in agreement, articles and verb forms recur. For example, “bamboo plants has” should be “bamboo plants have,” and “these soften fibres are spinned” needs the correct participle, “these softened fibres are spun.” The opening phrase “This diagram is representing” is also an awkward tense construction; “The diagram shows” is more accurate. Review subject–verb agreement and passive verb forms, and use shorter sentences when a longer structure becomes difficult to control.
