IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the production of fabric from bamboo plants.

Overall, it is clear that the manufacturing consists of nine stages. Mainly, the fabric is produced using plant bamboo and through fabric clothes are made. The process includes harvesting (autumn) of bamboo plants in spring season, cutting them into strips, addition of liquid, filtration and spine into fabric clothes.

Initially, plants bamboo are being harvest mainly in spring season, after that it cuts into strips using cutter machine, water and amine oxide is added into small strings of bamboo. Subsequently, long fibers of bamboo is being separated from liquid and crush those strips to make liquid pulp.

Furthermore, spin (thread) is made to make yarn , than the process of crossing thread over and under each other take place called weave. Finally, through this piece of weave, wearing clothes are being made such as t-shirts, socks and other fabric material.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and include the main endpoint: bamboo is ultimately made into fabric and clothing, including T-shirts and socks. However, several stages are misreported or placed in the wrong order. The diagram shows planting in spring and harvesting in autumn, but your overview says harvesting occurs in spring. Crushing the strips to make pulp comes before filtering, whereas your account reverses these steps; water and amine oxide are added later to soften the fibres, not before filtration. The overview also describes the process vaguely as “addition of liquid” and does not clearly summarise the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments. Report the stages in sequence and distinguish the chemical-softening step from crushing and filtering.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Subsequently,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help signal movement through the process. However, the progression is not consistently clear because some stages are presented out of order, and the overview compresses several steps into an unclear list. The sentence beginning “Subsequently” joins separation and crushing in a way that obscures their relationship. Some references are also difficult to follow, as in “through this piece of weave.” Improve cohesion by describing each stage in the diagram’s exact order and using clear references such as “the resulting fibres” or “the woven fabric.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “filtration,” “fibers,” “yarn,” and “weave,” and you identify the final products with specific examples. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or imprecise. “Spine into fabric clothes” appears to mean spinning fibres into yarn, while “crossing thread over and under each other” is an informal explanation of weaving. “Cutter machine,” “small strings of bamboo,” and “piece of weave” do not describe the diagram’s stages naturally. There are also word-form or spelling problems, such as “spine” for “spin” and “fibers” alongside British-style “fabric.” Use precise process terms consistently, especially “strips,” “pulp,” “fibres,” “soften,” “spin,” and “woven fabric.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the response uses sequencing clauses to connect stages. However, errors in sentence structure and basic forms are frequent enough to make some descriptions difficult to interpret. Examples include “plants bamboo are being harvest,” “after that it cuts,” and “long fibers … is being separated,” which show problems with word order, passive forms, and subject–verb agreement. The sentence “Mainly, the fabric is produced using plant bamboo and through fabric clothes are made” is also structurally unclear. Articles and plurals need attention, as in “a cutter machine” and “t-shirts.” Practise accurate passive constructions for process descriptions: “The bamboo is harvested,” “The strips are crushed,” and “The fibres are softened.”
