IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo and how the bamboos were hervested from the bamboo fields.
Overall, there are nine steps to prepare a bamboo fibric. It began with planting bamboo plants in spring and end with making the cloths with its fibric. It have two key features production of bamboo and crush strips from bamboos to make a liquid pulp.
This process begin with planting the bamboos in spring season and than take care of them till autumn the harvesting season of bamboos. After harvesting the third step is to cut into strips by an instument or a cutting machine. Futhermore, the most important step arive to crush the strips to produce liquid pulp.
After the production of pulp all the impureties are remove from them by the filteration process. this filtering process is divided into two parts first to saperate long fibres from the liquid and second to add water and amine oxide to make it pure. In the ending process the fibres are spin to make yarn then this is used to produce fibric and at the end fibric is used to make cloths.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a clear start and finish, from planting in spring to producing clothing. You also report the main sequence through harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving, so the response addresses the diagram. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the diagram shows water and amine oxide being added to soften the fibres, not to purify them, and it does not say that the bamboo is cared for between planting and harvest. The overview’s claim that there are “two key features” is not clearly explained. To strengthen the report, summarise the stages in a more precise overview and describe the final clothing stage explicitly, while avoiding unsupported additions such as impurity removal.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and phrases such as “After harvesting” and “After the production of pulp” help connect events. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “This filtering process is divided into two parts” incorrectly groups filtering and softening together, making the process sequence harder to understand. The overview also introduces “two key features” without clearly identifying them. Use one paragraph for the growing and preparation stages and another for fibre treatment and manufacture, with accurate transitions such as “Next” and “Once softened.” Clearer referencing would make the progression more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibres,” “yarn” and “weave,” which helps communicate the stages. However, the range and precision are limited, and several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable: “hervested,” “fibric,” “impureties” and “saperate.” Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “make it pure” and “the most important step arive.” Choose terms that match the diagram closely: the fibres are softened rather than purified, and the final stage produces clothing. Proofreading spelling and using precise process verbs would make the description clearer and more appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a sequence of stages joined with “After” and “then.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “It began … and end” shifts verb form, while “It have two key features” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. “This process begin” and “the fibres are spin” also need corrected verb forms. Capitalisation after the full stop in “this filtering process” and punctuation around the explanation of the two parts need attention. Practise consistent present simple for process descriptions and check that each sentence has a complete, correctly formed clause.
