IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given instructions tells how fabric made by bamboo tree.

In the first step, in spring season plant the bamboo seeds. In the autumn, it harvest and cut it into middle. Next crush the strips to become a liquid pulp. Now separate long fibres with the help of filter and it move to next step as soften fabrics with the use of water and amino oxide.

At that moment, soften fabrics start spinning to make yam and that yam passes through weave to make fabric. That fabrics transform into new varities like shirts, pants, shoes laces and other sufficient things.

That is summarise data into words.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the main stages, from planting and harvesting bamboo through processing the fibres into yarn and fabric, and you include the seasonal details shown. However, the response only minimally fulfils the task: it has no clear overview of the process as a whole, and several details are inaccurate or unsupported. The diagram says the bamboo is cut into strips, not “cut it into middle”; it specifies amine oxide, not “amino oxide”; and the final products shown are a T-shirt and socks, rather than pants and shoelaces. The response also contains 106 words, below the required 150, so the process is not sufficiently summarised. Add a concise overview and accurately describe the stages and final products.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are presented in a generally understandable order, and sequencing phrases such as “In the first step,” “Next,” and “At that moment” help the reader follow the process. This gives the response some organisation. However, the ideas are compressed into one paragraph, and the final sentence, “That is summarise data into words,” does not contribute to the process description or provide a useful conclusion. Some links are also unclear: “it move to next step” has an uncertain reference, and “that yam passes through weave” makes the relationship between spinning and weaving difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the stages, and connect each step with precise references and straightforward transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “filter,” and “weave,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the description inaccurate or awkward. “Yam” appears to be intended as “yarn,” while “soften fabrics” should refer to fibres, and “cut it into middle” does not clearly express cutting bamboo into strips. “Sufficient things” is also an unsuitable phrase for describing products. Aim for precise process terms such as “bamboo stalk,” “soften the fibres,” and “finished garments,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response uses mostly short, simple sentences, with a few attempts to link stages, for example, “Next crush the strips to become a liquid pulp.” However, frequent errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, and articles sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. “The given instructions tells” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “In the autumn, it harvest” lacks a passive construction and an appropriate verb form. “That fabrics transform” also has incorrect agreement and tense. The sentence beginning “Now separate long fibres” shifts into an instruction rather than consistently describing a process. Practise passive forms such as “the bamboo is harvested” and “the strips are crushed,” and check agreement and sentence completeness.
