IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram in the image illustrates that how fabric clothes can be made from bamboo plants.

Overall, this process starts by planting bamboo in the soil. Once they are ready to harvest, they are cutted into strips and after passing from required chemical processes, it is converted into threads which are eventually used for making clothes.

If we look at the diagram, it suggests that bamboo plants are harvested in spring season. In autumn, farmers start harvesting them and make strips from stem. After making strips, they are crushed to make liquip pulp which is, then filtered to separate long fibers from liquid.

Once the fibers are prepared, then they are softened by adding water and amine oxide and make a spin of it. This yam is then used for weaving to make fabric which is consequently, used for making different types of clothes like sweaters, shirts, jeans and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from planting through to finished clothing, and the overview correctly identifies the broad progression from bamboo to fabric. The description also includes key processing details, such as crushing the strips into pulp, filtering out long fibres, and softening them with water and amine oxide. However, one important factual error is that you say bamboo is harvested in spring; the diagram shows planting in spring and harvesting in autumn. The final products are described as “sweaters, shirts, jeans and socks,” but only a T-shirt and socks are shown, so the extra examples are unsupported. Some stages, especially spinning and weaving, could be explained more precisely to make the process fully clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, with transitions such as “After making strips” and “Once the fibers are prepared” helping to connect steps. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward, particularly “Once the fibers are prepared, then,” and the overview repeats information that is then given again in the detail paragraphs. The reference in “it is converted into threads” is also unclear because the reader must infer that “it” refers to the bamboo material or fibres. Grouping the stages more deliberately and using clearer references would make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “pulp,” “filtered,” “fibers,” and “weaving,” which allows the reader to understand most stages. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word-choice, spelling, and collocation problems reduce precision: “cutted” should be “cut,” “liquip” should be “liquid,” and “yam” appears to mean “yarn.” “Make a spin of it” is not a natural way to describe producing yarn, while “chemical processes” is vague for the steps shown. Prefer accurate process terms such as “spin the fibres into yarn” and avoid adding clothing types not indicated by the diagram.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a time clause in “Once they are ready to harvest” and a relative clause in “which are eventually used for making clothes.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. The opening phrase “illustrates that how” incorrectly combines two structures; use either “illustrates how” or “shows that.” In “bamboo plants are harvested in spring season,” the article is missing, and the passive construction “it is converted” does not agree clearly with the plural fibres or strips being discussed. The sentence beginning “Once the fibers are prepared, then” also has an unnecessary “then.” More consistent subject references and accurate passive forms would improve control.
