IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram shows the production of bamboo fabric from bamboo plants in a sequence of 9 steps.
Firstly, they plant bamboo plants during the season of spring. Several months later, when the bamboos grow significantly in autumn they are harvested. Then, they are sent to cutting machines which cut the whole body into strips. The strips are crushed in a crusher to break it down into liquid pulp
These wet pulps are then sent through a filter which separates the long thin fibres and the pre-existing liquid. These dry bamboo fibres are softened by soaking it in a mixture of water and amine oxide for some time. Consequently, they become bendable and enable the producers to spin it and make a yarn out of it. It is used as the raw material to weave a fabric which is then assembled and compiled to make our daily wearable cloths.
To conclude, the process flow chart enables us to understand which steps are occuring behind one of our most used products in day to day life, and also informs us about its uniquely interesting origin.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response covers the main sequence from planting through to fabric production, and it correctly includes the seasonal timing and the addition of water and amine oxide. However, some stages are reported less precisely than others. The diagram shows that the finished fabric is followed by clothing items, but the response instead says the fabric is “assembled and compiled” into clothes, which is not stated in the visual. It also describes the fibres as “dry” and says they are softened by “soaking” them, whereas the diagram only indicates softening with the specified mixture. The final personal-style conclusion does not add a useful process feature. A clearer overview of the transformation from plant to finished clothing, with only diagram-supported details, would make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and paragraphing separates the opening from the process description. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Then,” and “Consequently” help the reader follow the production stages. This coherent progression is a strength. However, the response does not clearly distinguish an overview from the detailed stages, and the final “To conclude” paragraph shifts into commentary about the product’s origin rather than summarising the process. Some links are also mechanical, while references such as “These wet pulps” and “it” in “spin it” are not fully clear. To strengthen the organisation, provide a concise overview after the introduction, group the stages into clear phases, and use precise references to fibres, yarn, and fabric.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “filter,” “fibres,” “spin,” and “weave,” which allows the main steps to be communicated. Some less common terms, such as “amine oxide,” are used appropriately. However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward for this context: “pre-existing liquid” is not a clear description of the liquid separated by filtering, “bendable” is informal, and “assembled and compiled” is an unsuitable pairing for making clothing. “Wearable cloths” is also less natural than a direct term for garments. Aim for precise process collocations and avoid adding elaborate wording where a simple technical description is clearer. For example, describe the fibres as being softened, spun into yarn, and woven into fabric.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including the time clause “when the bamboos grow significantly in autumn” and the relative clause “which separates the long thin fibres.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. In “These dry bamboo fibres are softened by soaking it,” the plural subject requires “them”; similarly, “enable the producers to spin it” has an unclear singular reference. “The strips are crushed … to break it down” also mismatches the plural subject and pronoun. The final sentence contains a tense error in “steps are occuring” and would be clearer with more controlled punctuation. Check pronoun agreement and reference, and proofread verb forms and sentence boundaries while retaining the useful range of structures.
