IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, the process involves nine linear stages, starting from planting bamboo plants in Spring. The plant fully grows by Autumn which is when it is harvested. The liquid from the plant is extracted and processed before it can be used to make clothes.

Initially, the bamboo plants are planted in the Spring and harvested in Autumn. After that, the plant is cut into strips using a bladder. The strips are crushed to make liquid pulp.

The long fibres are then filtered from the liquid pulp after passing it through a filter. In the next step, soften fibres are formed by adding water and amine oxide to the filtered liquid. The fibers are then spinned to make yam, which is later weaved to make fabric. Lastly, the fabric is used to make tshirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as having nine stages and give a clear overview from spring planting to the production of clothing. Most key stages are included, including crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the bamboo is cut with a saw, not “a bladder,” and the diagram says the fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide, rather than saying they are formed from the filtered liquid. The overview’s claim that the plant “fully grows” by autumn is not stated in the diagram. The response also contains 144 words, below the required 150. Add a little accurate detail about the final clothing stage and clarify the fibre treatment to make the account more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing the stages. The progression from planting and harvesting through to finished clothing is easy to follow, and phrases such as “After that,” “In the next step” and “Lastly” help signal order. This clear overall organisation is a strength. To make the cohesion more flexible and polished, avoid relying mainly on step-by-step transitions and use clearer links between related stages. For example, “The long fibres are then filtered from the liquid pulp after passing it through a filter” repeats the filtering idea; this could be made more concise. The reference to “the plant” also becomes less precise once the process concerns strips, pulp and fibres.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “manufacturing process,” “harvested,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered” and “weaved,” so the reader can generally understand the stages. Some word choices and spelling errors reduce precision, however. “Bladder” does not describe the cutting tool shown, while “yam” should be “yarn”; “spinned” is also not the correct form of “spin.” “Tshirts” would be more accurately written as “T-shirts.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they show that technical vocabulary needs checking. Aim to use the diagram’s terms consistently, especially for the tools, materials and products, and check spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You show a useful mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and many sentences are grammatically controlled. For example, “The strips are crushed to make liquid pulp” uses an appropriate passive construction, while “The plant fully grows by Autumn which is when it is harvested” combines ideas in a complex sentence. The sequence is generally expressed clearly through consistent present-tense process descriptions. A few grammatical choices need attention: “soften fibres are formed” should be “the fibres are softened,” and “the fibers are then spinned” should use the correct verb form, “spun.” The sentence beginning “The long fibres are then filtered…” is also awkwardly structured because it suggests the fibres pass through the filter. Keep the passive forms clear and ensure each clause describes the intended action.
