IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram depicts the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo plants.
Overall, the process is divided into nine substanial stages. Starting from the harvesting of bamboo plants and ending with the production of fabric materials. In this process the bamboo go through different type of stages including cutting, purification and spining.
Firstly, the bamboo plants are planted in spring season. Next, when these plants get matured they are harvested after six months and then the harvested bamboo are cut into strips. In the forth step these small strips are crushed down to acquire liquid pulp. Purification take place in fifth stage where the liquid is passed through filter which separate the long fibres from the liquid. These long fibre are hard to make them soft water and amine oxide which result in soften fibres.
The next step begins with the spinning of this fibres to make it yarn. Then the yarn is weaven to form small pieces of fabric. In the last stage, the small pieces are weave to eachother to form T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main sequence from planting through to finished clothing, and the overview identifies the nine stages and the broad transformation from bamboo to fabric. Most details match the diagram, including spring planting, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering, and adding water and amine oxide to soften fibres. However, the overview says the process starts with harvesting, although planting is the first stage. The claim that harvesting occurs “after six months” is not shown, and the final description incorrectly says small fabric pieces are woven together to make T-shirts and socks; the diagram shows clothing as the final products but does not specify this assembly method. Explain the key stages more precisely and avoid adding unsupported details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early processing stages and then the later stages. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Next,” and “In the last stage” help the reader follow the process, and the paragraph break supports the shift from processing fibres to making products. This is a coherent progression, though some links are mechanical and a few references are unclear. For example, “These long fibre” is followed by “These long fibre are hard to make them soft,” which makes the relationship between the fibres and the softening step difficult to follow. Use more precise references and connect each stage directly to the next, while retaining the useful chronological structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibres,” and “spinning.” These terms help describe the diagram, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate word forms, spelling errors, and awkward collocations that limit precision: “substanial,” “spining,” “weaven,” and “weave to eachother” are examples. “Purification” is also less exact than describing the filtering stage, while “small pieces of fabric” does not clearly convey the diagram’s woven fabric. Aim for accurate process terms and natural combinations, such as “the fibres are softened” and “the yarn is woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which separate the long fibres from the liquid” and a time clause beginning “when these plants get matured.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The overview contains a sentence fragment: “Starting from the harvesting of bamboo plants and ending with the production of fabric materials.” There are also agreement and verb-form problems in “the bamboo go,” “the liquid is passed through filter which separate,” and “the yarn are weave.” Improve control of subject–verb agreement, articles, and passive forms, which are especially useful for describing a process. Combining the overview fragment with the preceding sentence would also make the structure more complete.
