IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram demonstrates the production of fabric from bamboo in nine steps .
Overall, we can see that the process starts by planting bamboo plants and after eight steps it ends with bamboo fabric.
To begin with the plantation of bamboo plant in spring the second step occurs in Autumn which is harvesting of bamboo trees furthermore in third step it is cut into strips followed by crushing to make liquid pulp. In order to separate long fibers from liquid the pulp is filtered in fifth step.
Moving on to sixth step in which addition of water and amine oxide occurs in the filtrate for the pupose of softening of fibers. In the seventh step the spinning of fibers occurs to form yarn which is the foundation of last sep. In step eight the yarn is finally weaved to produce fabric and in final step we can produce the required clothing manufactured from bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from planting through to finished clothing, and the overview correctly identifies the beginning and end of the process. The sequence of cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving is also mostly reported accurately. However, the overview says the process ends with “bamboo fabric,” whereas the final illustration shows clothing made from the fabric; this distinction could be clearer. Some details are less fully explained: for example, the final stage is described as producing clothing, but the relationship between weaving the fabric and making the garments is not explicitly stated. A more precise overview of the transformation from plant to finished products, alongside consistently accurate stage descriptions, would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall progression and uses paragraphs to separate the overview from the detailed stages. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with,” “Moving on to,” and “In the seventh step” help readers follow the process. However, some connections are mechanical or awkward: “furthermore” does not clearly express the relationship between harvesting and cutting, and the long opening detail sentence combines several stages without clear punctuation. The reference in “the foundation of last sep” is also unclear, and the final sentence repeats “final step” after already introducing step eight. Grouping the stages into clearer sentences and using linking words that show sequence or cause more precisely would make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “softening,” “spinning,” and “yarn.” These terms help communicate the manufacturing stages, and the response attempts more formal phrasing such as “in order to separate.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “plantation of bamboo plant” is awkward, “the foundation of last sep” is unclear, and “weaved” is not the appropriate form here; use “woven.” There are also spelling errors in “pupose” and “sep,” while “bamboo trees” is less precise than “bamboo plants.” More accurate process collocations and careful proofreading would improve precision and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex structures, including “In order to separate long fibers from liquid…” and clauses beginning “which” and “followed by.” The main sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “To begin with the plantation of bamboo plant in spring the second step occurs in Autumn” lacks clear sentence boundaries and has article and number problems. “In the seventh step the spinning of fibers occurs to form yarn which is the foundation…” also needs clearer clause punctuation and structure. There are inconsistent sentence patterns, and spaces before full stops appear in the opening. Aim for shorter, complete sentences, check articles and singular/plural forms, and punctuate subordinate clauses carefully.
