IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo. Overall, it includes many stages to make fabric from bamboo. It includes both mechanical and chemical processes.

Firstly, the bamboo plant is grown in spring when it grows properly. The farmer harvest the plant in autumn. The farmer collects all the bamboo plants and then cuts it into strips so that it will be divided in many smaller pieces. After that it will be crushed into strips to make liquid pulp. It is cleaned from much waste. Then it will be filltered to separate long fibres from liquid and also to remove waste material. They add some chemical like water and amine oxide to soften the fibres of material. It also sent it to many industries of clothing. The clothing company make it to the next.

Now, at this stage they manufacture it and spin it to make a roll of it or make yarn. Then they weave it and make fabric. Then the companies make it differnt types og dresses. So at the last, the cloth will be ready.

In conclusion, the bamboo fabric made by many stages as transforming and also to manufacturing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as fabric production from bamboo and give a broad overview that it involves mechanical and chemical stages. Several key stages are reported, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the account is only partly accurate and complete: the diagram shows the final step as finished clothing, but this is not clearly described, and the claim that the material is sent to clothing industries is not shown. Some stages are also unclear or misrepresented, such as saying the bamboo is crushed “into strips” after it has already been cut into strips. To strengthen the response, summarise the full sequence accurately and make the overview identify the progression from growing and processing bamboo to producing fabric and clothing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the process, with a concluding sentence. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “After that,” “Then” and “at the last” help the reader follow the stages. However, the progression becomes less clear when the account shifts to “It also sent it to many industries of clothing” and “The clothing company make it to the next,” because the references are vague and the sequence is difficult to interpret. The later paragraph also repeats the idea of manufacturing and making fabric. Use clearer paragraphing for the overview and stages, and connect each step directly to the next with precise references to the bamboo, fibres, yarn and fabric.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spin” and “weave,” which allows you to cover several stages. However, the range is limited and some wording is repetitive or imprecise, such as “make fabric,” “make it” and “many stages.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “filltered,” “differnt” and “og,” and awkward expressions such as “a roll of it” and “make it differnt types og dresses.” These reduce precision, especially when describing the later stages. Build a more accurate process vocabulary and check spelling; for example, distinguish producing yarn from weaving fabric and describe the final products as clothing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the opening overview is understandable. However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent, with errors appearing throughout the response. For example, “The farmer harvest the plant” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “Then it will be filltered” uses an incorrect verb form and passive construction. “The clothing company make it to the next” also has agreement and sentence-completion problems, and “the bamboo fabric made by many stages” is missing a finite verb. Most sentences rely on basic patterns, and the longer sequences sometimes become difficult to follow. Practise accurate present-simple descriptions of processes, including passive forms such as “the strips are crushed” and “the fibres are softened,” and check agreement and complete clauses.
