IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The procress of fabric manufacturing commence with the plantation of bamboo in the spring and harvest in the autumn reason. Which is followed by the cutting of bamboo trees into strips to make it easy for crashing and convert it into liquid pulp.Subsequent stage leads to filtering the liquid to get fibers of the bamboo.Thereafter add water and amine oxide to make the fibers soft. Proceed to spin to make yarn form the fibers. The next step is to make fiberic weave from the collected yarn and ultimately the weave leads to the manufractuirng of the of the fabric material which is finalized from the selling to the costumer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad sequence from planting and harvesting through processing to fabric, and correctly include the seasonal details and the addition of water and amine oxide. However, the response is only a brief summary and does not fully report the diagram’s main features: it omits the final clothing stage and gives little detail about filtering, spinning, and weaving. The claim that the fabric is finalized through selling to a customer is not shown in the diagram. The overview is also not clearly separated from the stage-by-stage account. The response contains 109 words, so it is 41 words below the required minimum. To improve, describe the complete process accurately and add a concise overview of its progression from growing bamboo to finished garments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and linking expressions such as “Which is followed by,” “Subsequent stage,” and “Thereafter” help signal progression. This gives the reader a basic sense of how the process develops. However, the response is written as one continuous sequence rather than being organised into clear paragraphs, and some transitions feel mechanical or are attached to incomplete sentences. For example, “Which is followed by…” cannot stand as a complete sentence, while “Proceed to spin” shifts abruptly in style. Grouping the stages into an introduction/overview and a process description, then using straightforward links such as “Next” and “Finally,” would make the progression clearer and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtering,” “fibers,” and “yarn.” These terms show an attempt to describe the manufacturing stages rather than relying only on general language. However, the range is limited, and several inaccurate word choices or spelling errors make parts difficult to understand: “crashing” is used where crushing is meant, “fiberic weave” is unclear, and “manufractuirng” and “costumer” are misspelled. Phrases such as “plantation of bamboo” and “make fiberic weave” are also unnatural in this context. Use precise process terms consistently, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts to connect stages using longer structures, for example, “Which is followed by the cutting…” and “to make it easy for…” However, these attempts are often faulty, and the sentence patterns are limited. “The process … commence” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “Which is followed by…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. The opening also joins ideas awkwardly with “and harvest in the autumn reason,” and the final clause, “which is finalized from the selling,” is grammatically unclear. Punctuation is inconsistent, including the missing space after “pulp.” Build a reliable base with complete sentences, accurate verb forms, and clear clause boundaries before adding more complex structures.
