IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates production of fabric from bamboo which is used in textiles industry.

Overall,it is seen that process is made in nine linear series steps it begins with planting of bamboo plants to how it is disturbed to retail stores in market.

An analysis of image reveals that the cultivation of bamboo plants in the spring season.Once it grown and matured it is harvested by manually with hands. In addition these harvested bamboo sticks are need to cut into small strips with the cutter.Later strips are done to crush to make liquid pulp.Although this liquid pulp need to make filter to separate the long fibres crystals from liquid .

The production of soften fibres are addded the chemical substance amine oxide and water. Then, they spun to make yarn for metres long.Next, the yarn weave to fabric. Finally, after weaving done they fabric clothes are been stitched such as shirts, socks etc for then these clothes are dispatched to various shops in the market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from planting through to fabric and clothing, and the overview correctly identifies a nine-step process beginning with bamboo cultivation. However, some details are inaccurate or unsupported: the diagram shows harvesting in autumn, not harvesting manually by hand, and it does not show dispatch to retail stores or clothes being stitched. The final stage depicts finished clothing, so report this without adding a distribution stage. Some process details are also unclear, particularly the filtering and softening stages. To strengthen the response, give a concise, accurate overview of the agricultural and manufacturing phases, then describe the steps in order using only information shown in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the stages. The sequence is generally easy to follow, with markers such as “Once,” “Later,” and “Finally,” and the reader can trace the process from cultivation to finished products. This coherent progression is a strength. However, some links are mechanical or unclear, as in “Although this liquid pulp need to make filter,” and the transition from weaving to clothing and retail introduces unsupported information. Punctuation spacing also makes connections harder to read (“Overall,it” and “Then, they”). Use more precise linking phrases and ensure each sentence clearly connects one stage to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “weave,” which helps communicate the manufacturing sequence. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “disturbed to retail stores” does not describe the diagram, “fibres crystals” is unclear, and “they spun” is not the natural way to describe making yarn. “Cutter” is also less precise than the circular saw shown. Aim for accurate process verbs and natural combinations, such as “the pulp is filtered” and “the fibres are spun into yarn.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a time clause beginning “Once it grown and matured” and a sequence of linked process descriptions. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make some stages difficult to understand. For example, “Once it grown” needs a finite verb (“Once it has grown”), while “the production of soften fibres are addded” has an incorrect structure and agreement. Passive forms are especially important for describing this process: use forms such as “the strips are crushed” and “the fibres are softened.” Check sentence boundaries and punctuation as well, and build accuracy with short, complete process sentences before adding complex clauses.
