IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram below shows the multiple stages of manufacturing fabric from bamboo plants along with the cultivation for final clothing items
Overall, the process incldues nine stages but there are three main stages: agricultural cultavation, chemical and mechanical processing and textile manufactureing.
To begin with, the cycle starts with planting bamboo plants in spring. After growing for few seasons, the mature bamboo is cultivated in autumn. Then the bamboos are cut in the mechaical process, after making that process thhe strips are crushed for liquid pulp.
In the fifth stages, the mixture undergoes purification. Once isolated, these fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide. In the final phrase the soft materials are spun into yarns. This yarns weave into fabrics. Lastly this is how the cloths are made such as t-shirt and shocks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a relevant overview by grouping them into cultivation, processing and textile manufacture. The sequence is mostly accurate, including planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, crushing the strips, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the final stage is not clearly described: the diagram shows finished clothing items after the fabric is woven, but your ending only says that clothes are made. Some details are also vague, such as “after growing for few seasons,” which is not specified in the diagram. The response is 135 words, below the required 150, so it has limited space to report the stages fully. Add a little more precise detail about the final products and the transitions between stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by the early stages and then the later processing stages. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Then,” “In the fifth stages,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the process. The paragraphing is also appropriate for a short process description. However, some links are awkward or unclear, particularly “after making that process,” which does not clearly explain the transition from cutting to crushing. “Once isolated” also requires the reader to infer that the fibres have been separated by filtering. Use direct links that name the action and its result, and check that each reference clearly identifies the material being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “cultivated,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “purification,” “fibres,” and “spun into yarns.” These choices show an attempt to describe the stages rather than relying only on basic verbs. However, several inaccurate or misspelled expressions reduce precision: “mechaical,” “cultavation,” “manufactureing,” “thhe,” and “shocks.” “Purification” is also less exact than “filtering” for the diagram’s separation stage, while “soft materials” is vague for softened fibres. Aim for accurate spelling and consistent process terms, and avoid using a near-synonym when the diagram provides a precise label. This would make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview with a colon and the clause beginning “Once isolated.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “After growing for few seasons” needs an article and a clearer subject, while “This yarns weave into fabrics” has problems with both agreement and verb form. “In the fifth stages” also has a number mismatch, and “Lastly this is how…” is an awkward sentence construction. Practise accurate articles, singular and plural agreement, and passive forms for processes—for example, “the yarn is woven into fabric.” More reliable control of these patterns would strengthen the description.
