IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the proces of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, it is evident that the process consists nine distinct stages, beginning with plantation of bamboo and culminating with final production of the final goods.
Initially, bamboos are cultivated and harvested during monsoon season. After that bamboo is cut into small strips using machine to make liquid pulp. Then, strips are crushed to make liquid pulp.
Subsequently, long strips are filtered from the liquid. Once this stage has been completed, the resulting material is softned using water and amine oxide.
In the subsequent stage, the process undergoes the spin to make yarn. Finally, the fabric is used to make various types of clothes, including t-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as having nine stages and give a relevant overview from bamboo cultivation to finished products. Several key stages are also reported, including crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and making clothing. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram specifies planting in spring and harvesting in autumn, not during the monsoon season, and it shows cutting and crushing as separate stages. The overview’s phrase “final production of the final goods” is also vague. The response addresses the task only partially because it omits the weaving stage and gives limited detail about the final sequence. It is also 33 words below the required minimum. To improve, report the stages in order, accurately distinguish each one, and include the diagram’s key details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression, with an overview followed by stages introduced through “Initially,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally.” This makes the process reasonably easy to follow, and the sequence from cultivation through fibre treatment to yarn and clothing is mostly apparent. The paragraphing is also appropriate for a short process description. However, the connection between cutting and crushing is confusing: “bamboo is cut into small strips using machine to make liquid pulp” is followed by “strips are crushed to make liquid pulp,” making the purpose of the two stages seem repetitive. The final transition also skips weaving. For stronger cohesion, use one sentence per distinct stage and link each stage to the next without repeating its outcome.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “cultivated,” “harvested,” “filtered,” “softened,” and “yarn.” These choices help communicate the main stages, and terms such as “amine oxide” accurately reflect the diagram. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “plantation of bamboo” is less natural than describing bamboo being planted or grown, while “final production of the final goods” repeats “final” and lacks precision. “Long strips” also misrepresents the diagram’s long fibres. There are spelling errors in “proces” and “softned.” Aim for precise process terms and check spelling; for example, distinguish bamboo strips from the fibres separated during filtering.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex structures, including the overview clause “beginning with … and culminating with …” and the time clause “Once this stage has been completed.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the sequence is generally expressed clearly. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “the process consists nine distinct stages,” the verb requires “of”; “using machine” needs an article; and “the process undergoes the spin” is not a well-formed construction. The opening sentence also contains a spelling error, which is addressed under vocabulary rather than grammar. To improve, check verb patterns, articles and natural sentence construction, and use a consistent present tense for describing the process.
