IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The below diagram depicts the process about how fabric is made from bamboo.
Overall the process is long and tidious, there are total 9 steps in the process. First step is planting bamboo plant and last step is making cloths.
To begin with, the very first step is to plant a small bamboo plant, which is mainly done in spring season, further that bamboo plant is harvested during the autumn season. Third step is to cut bamboo into many strips, it is time consuming and delicate step. Furthermore that strips are crushed to make liquid pulp and a filter is used to seperate long fibres from liquid pulp. The most important step is to soften the long fibres which were separated from the pulp, it is mainly done by mixing water and amine oxide along with fibres. Nowthe process is quite simple, those soft fibres are now transformed into yarn, it is done by spinning process. Final steps are to weave the yarn into desired fabric and make cloths out of it. Cloths such as socks, T shirts, Shirts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from planting through to finished clothing, and the seasonal details—planting in spring and harvesting in autumn—are accurately reported. The overview also identifies the nine-step sequence and its beginning and end. This is relevant coverage, but some details are less fully or precisely described: for example, the diagram shows the final stage as clothing items, rather than explicitly showing a separate step of making clothes from fabric. The description of cutting as “time consuming and delicate” is not supported by the diagram, while the overview could better summarise the transformation from raw bamboo to yarn and then fabric. Focus on observable stages and give a concise overview of the main production phases.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression, moving from the initial growing stages to processing and then to the finished products. Paragraphing separates the overview from the detailed sequence, and connectors such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “Final steps” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, several transitions feel mechanical, and “Nowthe process is quite simple” interrupts the factual tone and does not clearly connect the stages. The long middle paragraph also groups many steps together. Use clearer stage groupings and more precise links, such as “After the fibres are filtered” and “Once softened,” to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spinning,” and “weave.” These terms make the manufacturing sequence understandable, and you attempt more specific language such as “amine oxide.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, however: “process about how” is awkward, “making cloths” is less precise than “producing garments,” and “the most important step” adds an unsupported judgement. There are also spelling errors, including “tidious” and “seperate,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, neutral process language and check spelling; avoid evaluative descriptions unless the diagram supports them.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and longer sentences with clauses, for example, “which is mainly done in spring season” and “those soft fibres are now transformed into yarn.” The sequence remains understandable despite some grammatical errors. Accuracy is uneven in sentence construction and punctuation: “Overall the process is long and tidious, there are total 9 steps” joins two independent clauses with a comma, and “First step is planting bamboo plant” is missing articles. “Nowthe process” also needs a space, while “it is mainly done by mixing water…” has an unclear reference. Practise article use and sentence boundaries, and make sure pronouns clearly refer to the relevant material or stage. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
