IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The digram illustrate several steps of how bamboo fabric is manufactured.

Overall, it is clear that the process consists of nine stages, beggining with in the spring season plant bamboo plants and ending with making fabric cloths and socks.

To begin with, planting bomboo plants in spring season. Following this, cut down the harvest in autumn season. Once this stage has been completed, cut down the stems into strips with the mechine. Subsequently, crush the strips into pieces to make liquid pulp, before the material is sent to the next stage.

In the next stage, filter thosees crush strips and separate them long fibres from liquid, After that, in the soften fibres add some water and amine oxide. The process then continues with making yarn to spin like a ball shape. Next, the weave is ready and make fabric cloths, finally, with help of spin , weave tshirts, socks with fabric quality.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as having nine stages and give a relevant overview from spring planting to finished clothing, which captures the diagram’s overall direction. Most of the main stages are included, including harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: “cut down the harvest” does not clearly describe harvesting bamboo, and the final sentence suggests that spinning and weaving produce the T-shirts and socks without clearly stating that these are the finished products. The overview also says “making fabric cloths and socks,” although the diagram shows clothing items after the fabric stage. Make each stage’s input and output more precise, especially at the end.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the stages in sequence, and transitions such as “To begin with,” “Subsequently,” and “In the next stage” help the reader follow the process. This logical progression is a strength. However, some links are mechanical or unclear, and punctuation occasionally disrupts the flow. For example, “before the material is sent to the next stage” adds little, while “After that, in the soften fibres add some water and amine oxide” makes the relationship between the action and the stage difficult to follow. The final sentence also combines several steps without a clear sequence. Use transitions selectively and make each sentence express one stage or a clearly connected pair of stages.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “amine oxide,” “yarn,” and “weave,” so the reader can recognise most of the production stages. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “separate them long fibres from liquid,” though the phrasing is inaccurate. Several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “digram,” “beggining,” “bomboo,” “mechine,” and “thosees” are distracting, while “fabric cloths” and “with fabric quality” are unnatural or unclear combinations. Aim for accurate, standard process terms and check spelling. Prefer concise expressions such as “harvest the bamboo” and “finished garments” over awkward or repetitive wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sequencing, using forms such as “Once this stage has been completed” and “before the material is sent to the next stage.” However, sentence control is uneven, and several grammatical errors make relationships between actions unclear. The opening “To begin with, planting…” is a fragment, while “Following this, cut down…” lacks a clear subject and uses an unsuitable verb form for a process description. In “separate them long fibres from liquid,” the sentence pattern is incomplete, and “in the soften fibres add…” is not grammatically formed. The final sentence also lacks a clear structure. Use consistent present simple passive forms—for example, “The bamboo is harvested”—and check articles, prepositions, and complete sentence construction.
