IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram illustrates who various fabrics are manufactured from the bamboo plants.

Overall, it is quite clear that the fabric manufacturing process is consist of nine well-structures steps, beginning with the cultivation of bamboo plants in spring season and ending with ready made T-shirts, pants.

To commence with, growing and harvesting bamboo plants in spring season is first and foremost step in the fabric manufacturing process. In the second stage, the cultivated plants are now cutting down in the autumn season. Meanwhile, in the third step, the harvested plants are now cutting down into small strips through a fixed chainsaw. Simultaneously, in the following step, the small strips are now curshing into more tiny pieces to make liquid pulp from them.

In the subsequent step, the crushed strips are now filtering via a filter to isolate long fibres from liquid. Furthermore, in the sixth step, the filtered materials are now softing by adding water and amine oxide to the filtered goods. Similarly, in the next stage, the soften fibers are become spinning to make yarn from them. Additionally, in the second-to-last step, the spin ball converted into weaves to make the final end fabric. Ultimately, in the final step, t-shirts, pants and other clothing related items are manufactured from these fabrics.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the process from planting through to finished clothing and give a clear overall summary of its nine stages. Several key details are accurately reported, including the seasonal timing, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering out long fibres, and adding water and amine oxide. This gives the response a relevant and generally complete account. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: planting and harvesting are combined as the first step, although they are separate stages, and the diagram shows T-shirts and socks rather than pants. The overview could also identify the main transformation more precisely: bamboo is processed into fibres, then yarn, fabric and clothing. The response addresses the task, but some features are less fully and accurately presented than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account of the stages. Paragraphing helps distinguish the summary from the detailed process, and sequencing expressions such as “To commence with,” “In the subsequent step” and “Ultimately” make the order easy to follow. The reader can generally trace the process despite the diagram’s alternating row directions. However, some linking is mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated “In the… step” pattern and the use of “Meanwhile,” “Simultaneously” and “Similarly” where the stages are sequential rather than concurrent or comparable. More direct transitions, together with clearer references to the material at each stage, would make the progression smoother and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “harvesting,” “liquid pulp,” “long fibres” and “amine oxide,” which helps communicate the stages. However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or unnatural, and these limit precision: “who various fabrics” appears to mean “how fabric,” “fixed chainsaw” is not the tool shown, and “the spin ball converted into weaves” is difficult to interpret. There are also spelling errors such as “curshing” and “softing,” alongside awkward phrases such as “final end fabric.” Aim for accurate process collocations—for example, “crush the strips,” “soften the fibres” and “spin them into yarn”—rather than adding elaborate wording that does not fit the meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, and the overall sequence remains understandable. However, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction occur often enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. For example, “the fabric manufacturing process is consist of” should be “consists of,” while “the cultivated plants are now cutting down” needs a passive form such as “are cut down.” Similarly, “the soften fibers are become spinning” does not form a grammatical clause; use “the softened fibres are spun into yarn.” Articles and number also need attention in phrases such as “is first and foremost step.” Practise forming consistent passive constructions, which are especially useful for describing processes, and check each sentence for a complete, correctly formed verb.
