IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo plants.

Overall, there are nine stages of bamboo fabric manufacturing including plant growing, harvesting, crushing, filtering and making yarn etc. The initial stage is bamboo plants growing in spring and final stage is make clothes from fabric.

To begin with, planting bamboo plants in Spring then harvesting it in Autumn after that cut into strips by using cutter. Moreover, crush all strips into small pieces to making liquid pulp, by using filter seperate long fibres from that liquid.

In addition, after filtering add water and amine oxide to make fibres soft followed by make yarn after spinning process. Finally, weave all yarn and make fabric for clothing purpose and can make easily clothes like shirts sweater and socks etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine stages and give a basic overview from spring planting to clothing production. Several central steps are also included, such as harvesting in autumn, crushing the bamboo, filtering, softening the fibres, spinning and weaving. However, the account is brief and some details are unclear or imprecise: “make clothes from fabric” does not clearly distinguish the diagram’s final clothing stage from weaving fabric, and “cut into strips by using cutter” omits that the bamboo stalks are cut. The response also falls 21 words short of the required 150, limiting the opportunity to report the stages fully. To strengthen coverage, describe each stage in sequence and clarify the transformation from pulp to fibres, yarn, fabric and finished garments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the process. The sequence is generally easy to follow, and transitions such as “To begin with,” “In addition” and “Finally” help signal progression. However, the stages are compressed into long, loosely connected sentences, and some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “after that cut into strips” and “by using filter seperate long fibres from that liquid” do not clearly show how one stage leads to the next. The overview also lists selected stages with “etc.” rather than summarising the process as a whole. Use one or two clear sentences for each group of stages, with precise sequencing language and clear references to the materials being processed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spinning” and “weave,” so the reader can understand the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive, such as “make” in “make yarn,” “make fabric” and “make clothes.” Some collocations are awkward, including “plant growing” and “for clothing purpose,” while “cutter” is less precise than a term describing the cutting equipment. There are also spelling errors, notably “seperate,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more specific process verbs and natural combinations, such as “cultivate bamboo,” “extract the fibres” and “produce garments,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates the broad sequence, but grammatical control is uneven and the range of sentence structures is limited. Several clauses lack a complete verb structure: “To begin with, planting bamboo plants in Spring then harvesting it in Autumn” is a fragment, and “after that cut into strips” has no clearly stated subject. Other examples include “the final stage is make clothes” and “followed by make yarn,” where the verb forms do not fit the sentence pattern. There are also problems with articles, plurals and agreement, as in “by using filter” and “harvesting it” after referring to plural plants. Practise forming complete sentences with a consistent passive structure, for example, “The bamboo is harvested and then cut into strips.”
