IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This diagram illustrates the major steps to follow for producing fabric from bamboo.
Overall manufacturing bamboo has six critical procedures to follow which consists of plantaion, weather, amine oxide and water. These factors plays a crucial role in the making of fabric from bamboo.
The very first step is the bamboo plantaion during spring season which plays significant part for good crop. After that comes harvesting the bamboo which happens in the autumn season. To make the bamboo strips in liquid pulp the bamboo has to be cut in strips then it has to be crushed to make in a liquid pulp form.
Conversely, Before filtering out all 4 steps has to be done thoroughly. Then all the long fibres has to be distinguished and separated from liquid. Furthermore water and amine oxide has to be added to soften the fibres after softening the fibre by water and chemical we can manufacture fabric from bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the topic and include some accurate stages, such as planting in spring, harvesting in autumn, cutting and crushing the bamboo, filtering fibres, and adding water and amine oxide. However, the response only minimally covers the process: the overview incorrectly says there are “six critical procedures,” and the listed “factors” do not summarise the full sequence. The final stages—spinning the softened fibres into yarn, weaving the yarn into fabric, and producing clothing—are omitted, while “we can manufacture fabric” does not report the diagram’s specific steps. To make the account complete, give an accurate overview of the full process and describe each major stage in order, including the finished products.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing stages. It also uses sequencing expressions such as “The very first step,” “After that,” and “Furthermore,” which help signal order. However, progression becomes unclear in the final paragraph: “Before filtering out all 4 steps” is difficult to interpret and does not accurately connect the stages, while “Conversely” suggests a contrast that is not present. The process is also left without a clear ending. Improve cohesion by following the diagram’s sequence consistently, using transitions such as “Next” and “Finally,” and ensuring each reference clearly identifies the stage being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “crushed,” “filtering,” “fibres,” and “soften,” so the reader can recognise several stages. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing a manufacturing process. “Weather” is not a process stage, “plantaion” is misspelled, and “distinguished and separated” is unnecessarily repetitive. The phrase “manufacture fabric from bamboo” is also too general where the diagram shows spinning yarn and weaving it into fabric. Aim for precise process terms and natural collocations, and check spelling and word forms. For example, use “cultivation” for growing the bamboo and “extract” or “separate” for obtaining the fibres.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the sequence “After that comes harvesting…” and a clause beginning “which happens in the autumn season.” However, errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “These factors plays” has subject–verb disagreement, and “all the long fibres has to be” also requires a plural verb. The sentence beginning “To make the bamboo strips in liquid pulp” has an unclear grammatical structure, and the final sentence shifts awkwardly from “after softening” to “we can manufacture.” Work on agreement, articles, and clear sentence construction; separating the stages into shorter sentences would help you express the process more accurately.
