IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates formation of fabric from bamboo through various steps.

Plants are made to pass through various prosedures such as cutting, crushing, filtering and then treated with chemicals to obtain the finest form of yarn, which in turn is used to make clothes.

Firstly, bamboo plants are planted in the season of spring. Then they are cultivated and harvested by farmers in autumn season. The plants are cut into strips to make finer form which is then passed through a process of filtration,it seperates the long fibre from the liquid.Furthermore,to soften the consistency of the fibers water and amino acids are added into it.Hence,it produces the finest form which is then rolled into a yarn.

The yarn is then used for various purposes such as the production of fabric by the process of weaving. That fabric in turn is utilized to make clothes. That is how bamboo plants are reconfigured into something useful for the humans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as a sequence from planting bamboo to producing fabric and clothing, and include the seasonal details: planting in spring and harvesting in autumn. However, some important stages are omitted or inaccurately described. In particular, the diagram shows the strips being crushed to make liquid pulp before filtering; your account moves from cutting directly to filtration. It also specifies amine oxide, not amino acids, and the final step shows finished clothing rather than simply saying the fabric is used to make clothes. The overview is present but could summarise the full transformation more precisely. The response is also one word below the required minimum. Covering every stage accurately and adding a little detail would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall sequence, with an introductory statement, a paragraph describing the early processing stages, and a final paragraph covering yarn, fabric and clothing. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Then,” and “Furthermore” help the reader follow the process. However, the middle stages are not fully connected in the correct order: crushing is omitted, and the transition from cutting to filtration is therefore unclear. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “then” and “That … in turn.” Organise the body around the diagram’s actual progression and use clearer references, such as “the resulting pulp” and “these fibres,” to strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “filtration,” “soften,” “yarn,” and “weaving,” which helps communicate the main stages. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this process. “Amino acids” misidentifies the chemical shown as amine oxide, while “finest form” is vague and repeated; “reconfigured into something useful for the humans” is also an awkward way to describe the final product. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “prosedures” and “seperates,” and some word forms or collocations need attention. Aim for precise process terms and check spelling carefully so that the vocabulary supports accurate reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which in turn is used to make clothes” and a purpose phrase in “to soften the consistency.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “Plants are made to pass” uses an unsuitable passive construction, and “water and amino acids are added into it” has an unclear pronoun reference. Several sentences run together because spaces are missing after commas, as in “cutting, crushing, filtering,” and “yarn, which.” Use clear subjects such as “the bamboo strips” or “the fibres,” and review articles, pronoun references and sentence punctuation to improve accuracy.
