IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given diagram explains about how the fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

At the beginning farmers plants bamboo in the spring season. Then farmers harvest the bamboo in the autumn after the plants grown properly they are ready to harvest. the third step is to cut bamboo into strips using cutter they crush into strips to make liquid pulp. From the liquid pulp separation of fiber process then softening the fiber by adding water and amine oxide the main and most crutial part is to spin it to make yarn after separeting soft fiber. then second last part is to make the weave using the yarn and the final part giving the designs and the sizes to the cloths. these is the process of using bamboo creating natural and soft yarn with the help of yern making the cloths which are chemical free and high quality ready to wear

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad sequence from planting and harvesting bamboo through processing fibres into yarn and fabric, and you correctly mention the spring and autumn stages and the use of water and amine oxide. However, the response only partially reports the diagram’s key features: it does not clearly describe the filtering stage, and it invents a final step involving “giving the designs and the sizes” when the diagram shows clothing items as the end products. The overview is also unclear, and the claim that the yarn is “chemical free and high quality” is unsupported. The response is one word below the required minimum. To improve, give a concise overview and accurately describe each major stage without adding information not shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic chronological order, signalled by “At the beginning,” “Then,” “the third step,” and “the final part,” so the reader can follow the general direction of the process. However, the response is presented as one paragraph, and several stages run together in long, loosely connected sentences. For example, “they crush into strips to make liquid pulp” blurs cutting and crushing, while the transition from pulp separation to softening is not clearly explained. The repeated use of “then” and “part” also makes the progression mechanical. Organise the description into an introduction/overview and a clearly sequenced body, using accurate links such as “After crushing,” “The resulting pulp is then filtered,” and “Finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibre,” “spin,” and “yarn,” which helps communicate the main subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or imprecise: “cutter” is vague for the cutting equipment, “make the weave” is an unnatural description of weaving, and “giving the designs and the sizes” does not match the diagram’s final stage. Spelling errors such as “crutial,” “separeting,” “yern,” and “cloths” are noticeable and reduce clarity. Aim for precise process terms and check spelling carefully; for example, use “filter the pulp,” “soften the fibres,” and “weave the yarn into fabric.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to connect stages in longer sentences, but grammatical control is weak and errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “farmers plants bamboo” has subject–verb disagreement, and “after the plants grown properly they are ready to harvest” is missing an auxiliary verb and has an unclear construction. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also unreliable: “the third step is to cut bamboo into strips using cutter they crush into strips” joins separate ideas without a clear grammatical link. There is little variety beyond basic sequencing and repeated infinitive phrases. Use shorter, complete sentences first, checking agreement, articles, and verb forms; then add controlled complex structures, such as “Once the bamboo has matured, it is harvested in autumn.”
