IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the process consists of six main stages, beginning with planting bamboo in spiring and harvesting in Autumn. After that, the bamboo is processed into fibres, which are softened using water and amine oxide.
In the first stage, bamboo plants are grown in spiring. When Autumn arrives, the bamboo harvested by workers. Next, the harvested bamboo is cut into small strips using a cutting machine. These strips are then crush to produce liquid pulp. This is an important stage because its help down the bamboo break.
Following this, the bamboo produce liquid pulp and then filtering separate long fibres from liquid . which are add water and a medicine add it called amine oxide. This make the spin fibres suitable for the next stage of fabric production. The diagram does not show the final stage of turning these fibres into finished fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the topic and give a basic overview of planting, harvesting and fibre processing, and you correctly mention the use of water and amine oxide. However, the response only partially reports the process: it says there are “six main stages” although the diagram shows nine, and it ends by claiming the final stage is not shown, despite the diagram depicting yarn being woven into fabric and finished clothing. The account also becomes unclear around filtering and softening, and does not describe spinning or weaving. To improve, give an accurate overview of the full sequence and report the key stages through to the finished garments, without adding unsupported explanations such as why crushing is important.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable sequence, using “Overall,” “In the first stage,” “Next,” and “Following this” to guide the reader through the process. The opening overview and subsequent description also provide some paragraph structure. However, progression becomes difficult to follow in the final paragraph: “the bamboo produce liquid pulp and then filtering separate long fibres from liquid” combines stages unclearly, and the sentence beginning “which are add water” has an uncertain reference. The final statement then contradicts the earlier sequence rather than completing it. Organise the body in the diagram’s order, with one clear stage or connected group of stages per sentence, and use pronouns only when their referents are unmistakable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary such as “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “amine oxide,” which helps convey the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the process harder to understand: “a medicine” is not an accurate description of amine oxide, “the bamboo produce liquid pulp” is imprecise, and “a cutting machine” is less specific than the diagram’s cutting action. Spelling errors such as “spiring” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process verbs and natural collocations, for example “crushed to form pulp,” “filtered to separate the fibres,” and “softened with water and amine oxide.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to use both simple and more complex sentences, including “When Autumn arrives” and “These strips are then crush to produce liquid pulp.” However, frequent errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “the bamboo harvested” (missing auxiliary), “strips are then crush” (incorrect participle), “its help” (agreement), and “which are add water” (faulty verb construction). The final paragraph also contains a sentence fragment after “liquid,” with punctuation that obscures the relationship between ideas. Practise forming passive process descriptions consistently—for example, “the bamboo is harvested,” “the strips are crushed,” and “the fibres are softened”—and check each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
