IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram demosntrate conversion of fabric from babmboo. The process goes to different stages, and the process of converting raw material into finished good is quite a lenghty procdure.
Process starts with the harvesting of bamboo plants, and ausutmn is conisdered veru suitable for harvesting in which bamboo grows.Further bamboo goes through cutting procedure, on next stage the strips of the bamboo further crushed to make the liquid pulp, and passeed through a filtration process which extracts the liquid from the fibers.
After the filtration, it further passed through a chemical reaction in which water and amine oxide are mixed together to soften the fibres.Furthermore after chemical reaction the fibre transferred to spinning process where yarn is made, which is essential for the weaving. However weaving is the process of converting yarn into finished good.
The finished good from these procedures are the final stage of process where the shirts, socks and other fabrics are ready to use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover the main stages from processing bamboo to producing fabric and finished items, including crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the account does not fully represent the opening of the process: it begins with harvesting, omitting the planting stage in spring, and says bamboo grows in autumn, whereas the diagram identifies autumn as the harvest season. The overview is also vague: calling the procedure “quite a lengthy” process does not clearly summarise its overall progression from seasonal cultivation through processing to clothing. Some stages are described imprecisely, such as saying filtration “extracts the liquid from the fibers” rather than separating long fibres from liquid. Include the planting stage and report each key step accurately to make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows a generally understandable sequence, moving from harvesting and cutting through fibre treatment to yarn, fabric and clothing. Paragraphing into an introduction and two process paragraphs helps the reader follow this progression. Linking expressions such as “After the filtration,” “Furthermore” and “However” also signal relationships between stages. At times, though, these links feel mechanical or are not quite appropriate: “However” introduces a continuation rather than a contrast, and repeated use of “further” makes the connections less natural. Some references are unclear, particularly “The finished good from these procedures,” which does not clearly identify the fabric or clothing. Use more precise stage-to-stage links and clearer references to improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “liquid pulp,” “filtration,” “fibres,” “spinning” and “weaving,” which helps communicate the manufacturing stages. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. For example, “conversion of fabric from bamboo” reverses the relationship between the raw material and product; “chemical reaction” is not an accurate description of softening the fibres; and “finished good” is unnatural in this context. There are also frequent spelling errors, including “demosntrate,” “babmboo,” “lenghty” and “procdure.” Build accuracy with process-specific terms and check spelling carefully; prefer natural phrases such as “manufacture fabric from bamboo” and “finished products.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences to connect stages, for example the sentence beginning “Furthermore after chemical reaction,” and the overall sequence remains understandable. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors recur in verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence boundaries. Examples include “The diagram demosntrate” (the verb needs to agree with the singular subject), “it further passed” (the passive verb form is incomplete), and “the fibre transferred” (a required auxiliary is missing). In “the shirts, socks and other fabrics are ready,” the punctuation is also poorly controlled, and the sentence combines products that the diagram does not identify as fabric. Practise accurate passive constructions such as “the fibres are softened” and “the yarn is woven,” and proofread punctuation and agreement.
