IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
These pictures illustrate the complete process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the process consists of six main stages in the diagram starting from planting bamboo in spring and harvesting in autumn. The bamboo cut into strips and then crushed to make liquid plup.
In the fifth stage, the bamboo plant are processed into fibers which is seprated by filter to form a liquid. This treatment help prepare the fiber soften by adding water and amine oxide.
In next step, spin the fiber to make yam and weave to make a fabric, so it can be used in making clothes like socks and t-shirts.
In conclusion, the diagram shows how bamboo is transformed from a natural plant into material suitable for fabric production through a series of agriculture process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as beginning with planting in spring and harvesting in autumn, and you include several later stages, including crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the overview says there are “six main stages,” whereas the diagram shows nine, and the final stage—finished clothing—is only mentioned as examples rather than clearly reported as the endpoint. Some process details are also unclear or inaccurate: filtering separates long fibres from liquid, rather than forming a liquid, and the response does not clearly explain the full sequence. The response is 129 words, below the required 150, so the task is only partially covered. To improve, give an accurate overview of the nine stages and describe each stage in order, including the finished garments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the processing and final uses. Sequencing phrases such as “Overall,” “In the fifth stage,” and “In next step” help the reader follow the process. However, progression is weakened by the incorrect claim of six stages and by moving from the fifth stage to later steps without clearly accounting for all nine. The final “In conclusion” repeats the general transformation rather than adding a useful summary. Some links between ideas are also abrupt, particularly the transition from filtering to softening. Organise the body in the diagram’s order and use clear stage links such as “After this” and “Once the fibres have been softened.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “manufacturing,” “harvesting,” “crushed,” “filter,” “fiber,” “spin,” and “weave,” which makes the topic recognisable. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “amine oxide” and “liquid pulp.” However, spelling errors and imprecise word choices reduce clarity: “plup,” “seprated,” and “yam” appear to mean “pulp,” “separated,” and “yarn.” “Bamboo plant are processed into fibers” is also an imprecise description of the filtering stage. Build accuracy by checking technical terms and choosing verbs that describe each action precisely—for example, fibres are separated from the liquid, then softened. A wider range of accurate process verbs would make the account more precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You produce several understandable simple sentences and attempt a longer sentence to connect the final stages: “spin the fiber to make yam and weave to make a fabric.” However, the response relies on a limited range of sentence structures, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “the bamboo plant are processed” has subject–verb disagreement, while “This treatment help” also needs a singular verb. The phrase “In next step” is missing an article, and “the fiber soften” does not form a complete, correctly structured clause. Use complete sentences with consistent present-simple passive forms where appropriate, such as “The fibres are softened” and “The yarn is then woven into fabric.” Proofread agreement, articles and verb forms.
