IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart illustrates the process of manufacturing of a fabric from bamboo.
Overall, it can be seen that it is a nine-step process including planting, harvesting, cutting, filtering, and weaving to make fabric.
The first step of the process is to plant bamboo plants in Spring, which is followed by the harvest of the plants by hand in Autumn. The next step is cutting down the harvested plants into strips using machinery. Afterwards, the liquid pulp is produced by crushing the strips which are cutted down. The long fibres are then seperated from the liquid pulp through the filtration process. After filtration water and amine oxide is added into the fibre to soften it to make yarn and it is then spin into a ball which in the last is used for the weaving process, in which the fabric is made by the machinery or by hand-weaving. Finally after all the procedure a fabric is produced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages from planting through to fabric production, and the overview correctly identifies a nine-step process. The seasonal details and the transformation from bamboo strips to pulp, fibres and yarn are also reported, so the response is relevant and generally accurate. However, some stages are less fully described: the final numbered step shows clothing items, but you conclude only that fabric is produced, and the overview omits the final clothing stage. The claim that harvesting is done “by hand” and that weaving may be done “by hand” is not established by the diagram. For a stronger response, describe the endpoint shown and avoid adding unsupported production methods.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The process is presented in a broadly logical order, and sequencing expressions such as “The first step,” “The next step,” “Afterwards,” and “Finally” help the reader follow it. The overview is separated from the detailed account, which gives the response a clear basic structure. However, the body is one long paragraph, and some links between stages are awkward or unclear. For example, “After filtration water and amine oxide is added into the fibre to soften it to make yarn” compresses softening and spinning into a confusing sequence. Use separate sentences or clearer transitions to distinguish these steps, and group the overview and process details into purposeful paragraphs. This would make the progression smoother and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “long fibres,” “filtration,” and “weaving.” These terms make the stages recognisable, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however: “manufacturing of a fabric” is less natural than “manufacture of fabric,” while “cutting down” is not the best description of cutting bamboo into strips. There are also spelling errors in “cutted” and “seperated,” and “procedure” is used awkwardly in “after all the procedure.” Aim for precise process verbs and check spelling; this will make the description more fluent and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses such as “which are cutted down” and a sequence of passive constructions, which suits a process description. The stages remain understandable despite some grammatical errors. These include incorrect verb forms in “which are cutted down” and “it is then spin,” and subject–verb disagreement in “water and amine oxide is added.” The sentence beginning “After filtration” also needs clearer punctuation and structure, as it joins several actions without cleanly separating them. Use consistent passive forms—for example, “is cut,” “are added,” and “is spun”—and divide the softening and spinning stages into separate clauses or sentences. This would improve accuracy while retaining structural variety.
