IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the transformation of bamboo plants into bamboo fabric.

Overall, the process consists of nine stages, begining with the cultivation of bamboo in spring and its harvesting in autumn, and ending with the production of finished fabric. from cutting to finished good, it has 7 steps such as (cut into strips, crush strips, filter, soften fibers, spin, weave and product).

Initially, the bamboo plants grown in spring and harvesting in autumn season. after harvesting, its cut in to strips, which are then crushed to make liquid pulp. The resulting pulp is filtered to separate the long fibres from liquid. These fibres are then softened by adding water and amine oxide.

At the point of fibres are softened, they are spun into yarn, after that the yarn woven to fabric form. Finally the same material goes to the final processing step, resulting in the completed bamboo fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as a nine-stage transformation and include the seasonal planting and harvesting, the pulp and fibre treatments, and the later spinning and weaving. This covers the main sequence, and the overview gives the reader a useful start and end point. However, the final stage is misreported: the diagram shows finished clothing items, not simply “the production of finished fabric” or “completed bamboo fabric.” The overview’s phrase “from cutting to finished good” is also unclear, and the seven steps listed there are not explained as a distinct phase. The response is 148 words, below the required 150. Add a little detail about the clothing products and clarify the overview to make the key features more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the stages. Linking expressions such as “Initially,” “after harvesting,” “The resulting pulp,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account a coherent overall progression. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however: “At the point of fibres are softened” is difficult to follow, and “after that” is less formal and clear than a direct link such as “The yarn is then woven.” The overview also interrupts the flow with the parenthetical list of seven steps. A more concise overview and clearer transitions between the fibre and yarn stages would make cohesion more flexible and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “cultivation,” “harvesting,” “crushed,” “filtered,” “fibres,” and “woven.” These terms communicate the main manufacturing stages, and “liquid pulp” and “separate the long fibres” show some precision. There are occasional word-choice and form problems that reduce naturalness: “finished good” is unclear, “final processing step” is not supported by the diagram, and “the same material goes to” is vague. Spelling and consistency also need attention, including “begining” and the mixed forms “fibers” and “fibres.” Aim for accurate, specific terms for the final products and use consistent spelling throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex structures, including a relative clause in “strips, which are then crushed” and a participle phrase in “resulting in the completed bamboo fabric.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the process consists of nine stages, begining” needs a correctly formed participle, while “the bamboo plants grown in spring” and “its cut in to strips” lack appropriate verb forms and auxiliaries. “At the point of fibres are softened” also has a faulty clause structure, and “the yarn woven” needs a passive verb. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but improving tense consistency and passive constructions would make the process description more accurate.
