IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The flow diagram illustrates the nine steps involved in manufacturing fabric from bamboo plants.
Overall, the bamboo fabric manufacturing process starts from bamboo plantation and after cultivation, they are processed to fibers which is used to prepare yarn for weaving fabric to make final garments.
At first, the bamboo plants are planted during spring that can be harvested in autumn. After collecting the bamboo stems, they are cutted into strips using a round shaped cutter that has many shap points around it. Then the cut pieces are crused to prepare a liquid pulp that contains the bamboo fibers. To get the fibers, the pulp of crused stips is filtered and the long bamboo fibers become seperated from the liquid. In the next step, the seperated fibers are made soft by adding water and amine oxide to spin them into yarn. Finally the bamboo yarns are use to weave into a fabric that can be used to make apparels such as t-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages and give a relevant overview, tracing the process from planting through fibre and yarn production to finished garments. The seasonal details are accurate, and you include the key treatments: crushing, filtering, and softening with water and amine oxide. The final clothing examples also match the diagram. However, the overview is somewhat unclear in “after cultivation, they are processed to fibers,” and the description does not clearly distinguish the separate stages of spinning the softened fibres into yarn and then weaving the yarn into fabric. Make the overview more precise and report each stage in sequence to present the process more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall progression, with an introductory sentence, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “At first,” “Then,” “In the next step,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process, and the information is grouped logically. This already provides a coherent structure. However, the linking is somewhat repetitive and mechanical, and the long final sentence combines spinning, weaving, and garment production in a way that blurs the sequence. Use a wider range of transitions or refer back to the materials more clearly, and separate the final stages into distinct sentences to make the progression more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “liquid pulp,” “filtered,” “fibers,” and “weave,” which allows the reader to understand the main stages. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “round shaped cutter.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural choices reduce accuracy: “cutted,” “crused,” “stips,” “seperated,” and “shap points” are noticeable, while “apparels” is not the natural plural in this context. Some phrases are also awkward, such as “bamboo plantation” for the planting stage. Check spelling carefully and favour standard process collocations, for example “cut into strips,” “separate the fibres,” and “finished garments.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “that can be harvested in autumn” and a purpose construction in “to prepare a liquid pulp.” The sequence is generally understandable, and some sentences communicate several connected stages. However, some errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction remain. For example, “they are processed to fibers which is used” has unclear reference and incorrect agreement; “the bamboo yarns are use to weave” has an incorrect verb form; and “the separated fibers are made soft … to spin them” makes the relationship between the steps unclear. Aim for accurate passive forms and agreement, and use separate sentences where a sentence currently joins distinct stages.
