IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrammatic illustration delineates the process of producing fabric from bamboo which begins with planting and ends with weaving.

Considering it from an overall perspective, it can be apparently observed that this process conatins 8 main steps to manufacture clothes from fabric. This process includes stages like growing, harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving.

To commences with, the bamboo plant in the spring which becomes mature in the autumn and than it is harvested and than the bamboo are cuted into strips. In the next step, the strips are crushed to make a liquid pulp and than the pulp is purify to remove liquid from long fibres. In the seprated fibres water and amine oxide is added to make the fibres soften.

Furthermore, the soften fibres is spined to make a yarn and from yarn the fabric is weaved and from fabric the clothes manufactured such as T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main stages from planting through to finished clothing, and the overview identifies the process as a sequence of production steps. Most details match the diagram, including seasonal planting and harvesting, crushing the strips into pulp, and adding water and amine oxide to soften the fibres. However, the overview says there are eight steps, while the diagram shows nine, and it describes the process as ending with weaving rather than the final clothing stage. The filtering step is also inaccurately explained: the diagram shows long fibres being separated from liquid, not liquid being removed from the fibres. Clarifying these points and distinguishing the final product stage would make the summary more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs covering the early and later stages. Connectors such as “To commences with,” “In the next step,” and “Furthermore” help signal progression, and the reader can generally follow the process. This clear overall organisation is a strength. However, some linking is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “and than,” and the long final sentence joins several stages without enough separation. The overview also says the process ends with weaving, while the final paragraph continues to clothing, which weakens the progression between the summary and details. Use a wider range of transitions and divide the final sequence into clearer clauses or sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spinning,” and “weaved,” so the stages are mostly identifiable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “delineates” and “overall perspective.” However, several word-choice, spelling, and word-form errors reduce precision: “purify” does not accurately describe filtering, “seprated” is misspelled, and “spined” is not the correct form for making yarn. “Diagrammatic illustration” is also unnecessarily elaborate compared with the straightforward “diagram.” Aim for accurate process terms and check spelling and collocations; this will make the vocabulary more natural and precise without requiring more complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the bamboo plant in the spring which becomes mature in the autumn” and a sequence of linked process clauses. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “To commences with” has an incorrect verb form, “the bamboo are cuted” has agreement and verb-form problems, and “the soften fibres is spined” has errors in adjective form and subject–verb agreement. Articles and passive constructions also need attention in “the fabric is weaved” and “the clothes manufactured.” Several sentences rely on repeated “and” links, making their structure less controlled. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and check agreement and verb forms in each clause.
