IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of producing fabric from bamboo. This process involves nine stages to obtain fabric.

Overall, this is a linear process to manufacture fabric from bamboo, which involves a mechanical and chemical process. In the starting, bamboos are growing, and in the last stage, clothes are formed by the weave.

In spring session, the bamboos are growning, and fully grown and harvested in the autumn session . Subsequently, they are cutted into small strips, to extract liquid pulp. Extracted pulps are filtered, and long fibres are separated from liquid.

The long fibres are mixed with amine oxide and water to soften those fibres. The soft fibres are span to make a yarn. The yarn is used to make weave. Those weave helps to make fabric, and those fabrics are used to manufacture clothes like shocks and T-shirts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the diagram as a nine-stage process and give a relevant overview, noting its linear nature and the change from growing bamboo to finished clothing. Most key stages are included, including harvesting, cutting, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp before filtering, rather than being cut “to extract liquid pulp,” and the final stage is the production of clothing, not simply fabric. The overview could also distinguish the initial growing and harvesting stages from the later mechanical and chemical processing. The response contains 140 words, so it does not meet the 150-word minimum. Add a little more precise detail about the sequence and the final products.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the early and later stages. Sequencing words such as “Subsequently” and “The long fibres” help the reader follow the process, and the stages are generally presented in the correct order. However, the links between some steps are not fully clear. For example, “they are cutted into small strips, to extract liquid pulp” makes the relationship between cutting and crushing difficult to follow, while “The yarn is used to make weave” skips the fabric-making step. Repeated use of “those” in the final sentences also makes referencing less precise. Use clearer links to show each transformation and refer directly to the material at each stage.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “pulp,” “filtered,” “fibres,” and “manufacture.” These terms make the main stages understandable, and “mechanical and chemical process” is a useful attempt to summarise the production methods. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “make weave” should describe weaving fabric, and “shocks” is a misspelling of “socks.” “Bamboos” is also less natural than “bamboo” when referring to the material, while “soft fibres” is clearer than “soft fibres” only if the preceding treatment is explicitly described as softening. Aim for precise process verbs and check spelling, especially for the products shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and some more developed structures, and the overall meaning is usually clear. There are, however, some errors in verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “the bamboos are growning” has an incorrect progressive form, and “they are cutted” uses the wrong past participle. In “fully grown and harvested in the autumn session,” the clause lacks a clear subject and finite verb. The phrase “The soft fibres are span” also has an incorrect verb form, and “The yarn is used to make weave” does not form a complete, natural grammatical construction. Review passive forms for process descriptions and ensure each sentence has a clear subject and correctly formed verb. More accurate control would make the sequence easier to follow.
