IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram provided illustrates the production of bamboo fabric.
Overall, production of bamboo fabric consists of nine stages from planting to weaving to make fabric. This usually takes upto two seasons, almost half a year.
In the first step bamboo plants have been planted in spring season, after that in the next step then these plants undergo harvesting in the autumn season. The third step involves cutting the plants into strips with the help of some machine before crushing the strips to form a liquid pulp. The fifth stage consists of filtration to separate the long fibres from liquid. Then add water and amino oxide in the fibres to soften them up, after that to produce yam spinning is done of soften fibres. Next step is to produce fabric for weaving and after waeving bamboo fabric has been formed and is used to develop different types of shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as bamboo-fabric production and report several key stages, including seasonal planting and harvesting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. However, the overview is incomplete: it says production runs “from planting to weaving,” omitting the final stage in which the fabric is made into clothing. The claim that the process “takes upto two seasons, almost half a year” is not stated by the diagram, which only gives spring and autumn for planting and harvesting. Some steps are also unclear or inaccurate, particularly “produce fabric for weaving.” The response is one word below the required minimum. To improve, give a concise overview of the full sequence and describe each stage precisely without adding unsupported timing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure: an introduction, an overview and a paragraph describing the stages in sequence. This makes the process broadly understandable. However, progression is weakened by awkward or repetitive linking, such as “after that in the next step then,” and the long final sentence combines several stages without clear boundaries. The diagram’s middle row moves from crushing to filtering and then softening, but the account would be easier to follow if each stage were presented in a clearly ordered sentence. Use a small range of accurate transitions, and separate the final spinning, weaving and clothing stages rather than joining them into one extended chain.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvesting,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filtration” and “fibres,” which helps communicate the main stages. The range is nevertheless limited, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “amino oxide” should be “amine oxide,” “yam” appears to mean “yarn,” and “develop different types of shirts and socks” is not a natural way to describe making clothing. “Some machine” is also vague. These errors do not prevent the reader from following the general process, but they reduce precision. Aim for accurate technical terms and natural process verbs such as “is converted into,” “is spun into yarn” and “is woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, errors are frequent, especially in verb forms, sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “In the first step bamboo plants have been planted” uses an awkward tense for a process description; “Then add water and amino oxide in the fibres” shifts into an imperative and lacks a clear subject; and “after that to produce yam spinning is done of soften fibres” is structurally difficult to follow. There is also a missing space after the full stop in “fabric.This.” Use the present simple passive consistently for process stages—for example, “The fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide”—and check sentence boundaries.
