IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo. There are nine stages in the diagram from plant bamboo in spring to enjoy products made from it for everyday use.
Overall, this is linear process, with various stages including, plant bamboo, harvest, cutting, softening, filtering, crushing, spinning, weaving to final product, namely, fabric.
In the initial stage, the bamboo is planted in spring and harvested by farmers in autumn. After harvesting, it is then cut into strips through a machine. Once the cutting is done then the crushed strips used to make liquid pulp.
The pulp is then send for the filteration, where long fibres get separated from the liquid through a funnel like machine. Now, the soften of fibres is started by adding water and amine oxide. This is also an essential step of the whole process. After that, spinning and weaving began, to make yarn and to make fabric respectively. At the final stage, different products ready for daily use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the process as a sequence from planting bamboo to producing fabric and describe most of its main stages, including the seasonal planting and harvest, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving. The overview also recognises the final use of the material, although it calls fabric the final product rather than noting that the diagram ends with clothing items. One important accuracy issue is that the overview lists the stages in the wrong order: crushing and filtering occur before softening. The final stage is also described only as “different products ready for daily use,” without explicitly identifying the clothing shown. The response covers the task, but these details and the brief treatment of the final stages limit its completeness.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the process in sequence. Time and sequence markers such as “In the initial stage,” “After harvesting” and “At the final stage” help the reader follow the account. However, the overview disrupts the otherwise logical progression by placing softening before filtering and crushing, and the body does not clearly signal the transition from the middle stages to the final stages. Some links are also awkward or repetitive, as in “After harvesting, it is then cut” and “Once the cutting is done then.” More precise sequencing and clearer links between stages would make cohesion more flexible and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “long fibres,” “spinning” and “weaving,” so the stages are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “amine oxide” and “funnel like machine.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “enjoy products” does not express the idea of producing or using them, “filteration” is misspelled, and “the soften of fibres” is not a natural phrase. “Different products” is also vague when the diagram shows clothing. Choose precise process verbs and standard forms, for example “filtering” and “softening the fibres,” and name the final products directly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “where long fibres get separated from the liquid” and a time clause beginning “Once the cutting is done.” The main sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, the overview needs an article in “this is a linear process,” and “Once the cutting is done then the crushed strips used” lacks a finite verb and has an awkward conjunction. In “The pulp is then send,” the passive requires “sent”; “the soften of fibres is started” also has an incorrect grammatical form. The final sentence, “different products ready,” needs a verb. Check articles, passive constructions and complete sentence structure while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
