IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the steps involved in the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.

The diagram shows the nine steps of fabric making from bamboo. From the plantation of bamboo to cutting it, and then the process of making yarn and finally fabric from it.

The first step is the plantation of bamboo. The bamboo is planted in spring and then harvested in the autumn season. After cutting, bamboo is then cut down into different strips. The strips are then crushed to extract liquid pulp. It is then filtered out to separate fibres from liquid. The fibres are hard at this stage and are then softened by adding water and amine oxide. The product is then spun to make yarn. The yarn is then woven to make fabric, which is then used to make different wearable clothes such as sweaters and socks.

The base of clothes is bamboo which after several procedure converted into fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover the main sequence from planting and autumn harvesting through processing, spinning and weaving, and correctly include the water and amine oxide used to soften the fibres. The opening also identifies the diagram as a manufacturing process. However, the overview is not clearly separated from the step-by-step account, and the final sentence repeats the idea that bamboo becomes fabric rather than highlighting the process’s main stages. Some details are imprecise: “different wearable clothes such as sweaters” is not supported by the diagram, which shows a T-shirt and socks, and “the fibres are hard” is an interpretation rather than a stated feature. A clearer overview contrasting the agricultural and manufacturing stages, with only diagram-supported details, would make the response more complete and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and sequencing words such as “first,” “then” and “after” help the reader follow the process. The paragraphing also gives the response a basic structure. However, the second paragraph largely repeats the introduction, while the final sentence repeats the central idea without adding a useful concluding overview. Connections between stages rely heavily on “then,” and references such as “it” and “the product” are not always precise about whether they refer to the pulp, liquid or fibres. Organise the response into a concise introduction and overview followed by a clearly sequenced account, and vary linking expressions while naming materials explicitly when needed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spun” and “woven,” so the reader can understand the production stages. There is some repetition, particularly of “diagram,” “bamboo” and “then,” and a few choices are imprecise or unnatural. “Plantation of bamboo” is less suitable than a direct description of planting, while “cut down into different strips” is awkward and “wearable clothes” is an unnecessary, unnatural phrase. “The base of clothes is bamboo” also does not express the relationship clearly. Aim for precise process collocations and avoid adding product examples not shown in the diagram; this would make the vocabulary more controlled and appropriate to an academic process description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response uses mostly straightforward sentence patterns and some passive forms appropriate to a process, such as “is then filtered” and “are then softened.” Meaning is generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. The sentence beginning “From the plantation of bamboo to cutting it” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. In “after several procedure converted into fabric,” the plural and verb structure are faulty, and “which is then used” has an unclear reference. The repeated use of “is then” also limits structural variety. Practise complete overview sentences and accurate passive constructions, for example, “After several stages, the bamboo is converted into fabric,” and check that pronouns clearly refer to the intended material.
