IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram demonstrates the manufacturing process of how fabric is made from bamboo.
Overall, the production of fabric contains natural process as well as human intervention. There are nine stages starting with planting bamboo plants during the spring season and ending in production of socks or tshirts.
To begin with, bamboo plants are being planted during the spring season. Secondly, the bamboo plants are harvested during the autumn season. Then the harvested bamboo plants are cut into strips. In order to make liquid pulp the strips are crushed.
After making liquid pulp, the long fibres are separated from liquid through a filteration process. Subsequently, the fibres are soften after adding some water and amine oxide to the long fibres. From these soften fibres, spin of fibres are produced to make yarn. In the next stage, weave of the yarn is done to make fabric. Finally, fabrics such as socks and tshirts are made.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the full sequence and give a clear overview: the process has nine stages, begins with spring planting, and ends with clothing. The details about autumn harvesting, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering the fibres, and adding water and amine oxide are grounded in the diagram. This meets the task well, with some features reported accurately and relevantly. However, the overview could capture the process more precisely by noting the progression from growing and preparing bamboo to producing yarn, fabric, and finished garments. A few descriptions are unclear or imprecise, particularly “spin of fibres are produced” and “weave of the yarn is done”; explaining these stages directly would make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that follow the process in sequence. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Then,” “Subsequently,” and “Finally” help the reader track the stages, and the order is easy to follow despite the diagram’s back-and-forth layout. This is clear progression overall. Some transitions are a little mechanical, however, and “After making liquid pulp” repeats information from the preceding sentence rather than smoothly linking the filtering stage. You could improve flow by grouping the stages into broader phases—for example, cultivation and preparation, fibre processing, and textile production—and varying the links between them.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “filter,” “yarn,” and “fabric,” so the main steps are generally understandable. There is also some useful task-specific language, such as “amine oxide.” However, several word choices and forms are inaccurate or awkward: “filteration” is misspelled, “fibres are soften” uses the wrong form, and “spin of fibres” and “weave of the yarn” are unnatural expressions. “Production of fabric contains natural process” is also imprecise. Aim for accurate process collocations and concise verbs, such as “the fibres are softened,” “the fibres are spun into yarn,” and “the yarn is woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex structures, including “In order to make liquid pulp the strips are crushed” and “the fibres are soften after adding some water and amine oxide.” The sequence is usually expressed clearly, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, though. In “the fibres are soften,” the passive construction needs the past participle “softened”; “spin of fibres are produced” also has an unclear subject and verb structure. The phrase “contains natural process” needs an article or a plural form, and “bamboo plants are being planted” is an unnecessarily progressive form for describing a general process. More consistent passive constructions and careful checking of verb forms would improve accuracy.
