IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The following diagram illustrates how fabric is manufactured from bamboo. There is a whole process that takes place to manufacture fabric from bamboo and the process is divided into few parts.

In the commencement of the process bambbo plants are required to be plant in the spring season and this is one of the first and important steps. By the autumn season the planted bamboos are ready to harvest before moving further for cutting process. In the next step the bamboos are suppose to cut into strips through a cutter machine.

By moving further strips are used to make liquid pulp, then Filteration will take place in order to seperate long fibres from liquid before entering into next step. In the next step water and amine oxide will be added both together in order to soften fibres.

In the next step step a ball like spin is required to make yarn, then the process of weaving will take place to make fabric. Finally in the last step the wove fabic will be used to manufactured clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover the main stages in the correct order, including seasonal planting and harvesting, cutting, processing the fibres, spinning, weaving and making clothing. This gives the reader a generally accurate account of the process. However, the response does not provide a clear overview of the process as a whole; the opening only says it is divided into “few parts.” Some stages are also under-described or imprecise: for example, the strips are said to be “used to make liquid pulp,” but the crushing step is not explicitly reported, and the final stage could be described as producing clothing items from the fabric. A concise overview identifying the progression from growing bamboo to finished garments, followed by clearer reporting of each transformation, would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence, and the paragraph breaks broadly separate the growing and harvesting stages from the later manufacturing steps. Linking phrases such as “In the next step,” “By moving further,” and “Finally” help show progression. However, the repeated use of “In the next step” makes the cohesion mechanical, and the opening does not give a useful overview to guide the reader. Some connections are also unclear: “before entering into next step” does not specify what is entering, while “then the process of weaving” could be linked more directly to the yarn. Grouping the stages into clearer phases and varying transitions—for example, “After harvesting” and “Once the fibres have been softened”—would improve flow and referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “soften,” “yarn,” and “weaving,” so the reader can follow the subject. There are also attempts at less common wording, such as “commencement” and “manufactured.” However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward for this process description: “a ball like spin” does not clearly describe spinning fibres into yarn, and “the wove fabic” is not a natural way to refer to woven fabric. Spelling errors such as “bambbo,” “seperate,” and “fabic,” along with “Filteration,” reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, control of verb forms and sentence construction is inconsistent, which fits this level. Examples include “plants are required to be plant” instead of “plants are planted,” “the bamboos are suppose to cut” instead of “are supposed to be cut,” and “will be used to manufactured clothes” instead of “will be used to manufacture clothes.” Articles and sentence structure also need attention in phrases such as “divided into few parts” and “before entering into next step.” The repeated “In the next step step” is another editing error. Practise accurate passive forms for describing processes, and proofread each sentence for agreement, articles and verb patterns.
