IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram represents the formation of the fabric from bamboo. The diagram shows the total nine steps of formation. These steps are: Plant bamboo plants, Harvest, Cut into strips, Crush strips, Filter, Soften fibers, Spin, weave and then final prodcut fabric.

The first step to plant the bamboo plants and then harvest the plants in the autum season. After that cut the harvested plants into the strips. Next step is crush the strips to make liquid pulp from the strips. Then filter that liquid to separate the long fibers. Next, soften the fibers by adding water and amine oxide in it. Then spin the mixture to make yarn from it. After that weave the yarn to make fabric. Then use that fabric to made different types of products like socks, t-shirts and trouser. So, digram shows how actually the fabric is manufacrured through bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the process as having nine steps and report most of its main stages in the correct order, including harvesting in autumn, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering, softening the fibres, spinning yarn and weaving fabric. However, the response has no clear overview of the process’s overall progression from growing bamboo to finished products, and the opening list largely repeats the stages rather than summarising the key features. The final stage is described as making socks, T-shirts and trousers, but the diagram shows a T-shirt and socks only; trousers are unsupported. The response also contains 144 words, below the required 150. Develop a concise overview, keep details faithful to the diagram, and meet the minimum length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The stages are generally presented in a sensible sequence, and linking expressions such as “After that,” “Next,” and “Then” help the reader follow the process. The response also begins with an introduction before moving into the steps. However, it is arranged as only two paragraphs, with the first paragraph functioning mainly as a repeated list and the second carrying nearly all the process detail. The repeated use of “Then” and “Next” makes the progression somewhat mechanical, while “So” introduces a conclusion that mostly restates the topic. Group the stages into clearer sections and use a wider range of links that show sequence and transformation without repeating the same pattern.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvest,” “liquid pulp,” “fibers,” “yarn” and “weave,” so the reader can understand the main manufacturing stages. However, the range is limited and some word choices or forms are inaccurate: “formation” is repeated, “final prodcut fabric” is unclear, and “manufactured through bamboo” is not a natural expression. There are also spelling errors such as “autum,” “digram” and “manufacrured.” Aim for precise process language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the final stage as “finished garments” and say that fabric is “made from bamboo” rather than “through bamboo.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response communicates the sequence using mostly simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “Next, soften the fibers by adding water and amine oxide in it.” However, the range is limited, and several sentence patterns are incomplete or awkward. “The first step to plant the bamboo plants” lacks a correctly formed verb construction, while “After that cut the harvested plants into the strips” omits a clear subject. There are also errors in infinitive and verb forms, as in “to made different types of products,” and the final sentence begins with the fragment-like “So, digram shows.” Use complete clauses with consistent subjects and accurate verb forms, and vary sentence structures while keeping them controlled.
