Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The opening identifies the diagram as a process for making clothes from bamboo and correctly notes that it has nine stages. The overview also gives the broad direction, from planting to finished clothing. However, the response stops mid-sentence at “the main stages involve harvesting the bambo by,” so it does not describe the intervening stages or complete the overview. It therefore reports only a small part of the process and leaves the key transformations—cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning and weaving—unexplained. The required minimum length is not met, which contributes to the very limited coverage. To improve, complete the response and summarise the stages in sequence, including the seasonal planting and harvest details shown.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introductory sentence is followed by an overview beginning with “Overall,” and the process is presented as moving from planting to finished clothes. This gives the reader a simple starting point. However, the response ends abruptly after “by,” leaving the final idea incomplete and preventing any clear progression through the stages. There are no developed paragraphs or linking expressions to guide the reader across the process. The comma after “Overall” also needs a following space. A clearer structure would use a short introduction, an overview of the start and end points, and a body paragraph that follows the numbered stages in order, using links such as “next,” “after this,” and “finally.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant process terms, including “nine stage process,” “planting,” “growing,” and “harvesting,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the vocabulary range is very limited because the description stops before explaining most of the manufacturing stages. There are also noticeable spelling errors in “cloaths” and “bambo,” and “beautiful set of cloaths” is subjective and less suitable for a factual process description. Use precise terms from the diagram, such as “cut into strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “yarn,” and “weave,” rather than relying on general wording. Correct spelling and neutral phrasing would make the description clearer and more appropriate for IELTS Academic Task 1.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response shows some control of basic sentence forms: “The diagram shows how…” is a clear introductory clause, and the writer attempts an overview with “Overall, the process starts…” However, the second sentence is not completed, ending with “by,” so its structure and meaning remain unfinished. The overview also runs together without a full stop after “plants,” making the boundary between ideas unclear. The phrase “nine stage process” needs a compound modifier form (“nine-stage process”), and the sentence would benefit from more varied structures to describe the sequence. Aim to write complete sentences, punctuate each idea clearly, and use consistent present simple passive forms where appropriate, for example, “The strips are crushed to produce liquid pulp.”
