IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates how fabric is made from bamboo tree.
overall,it is clear that the process contains nine stages, starting from the plantation and ends with the manufacturing of socks and shirt with the end product.
The process starts with the plantation of bamboo plant in spring season after that it is harvested in autumn season. The harvested crop is sends for cutting into strips by a machine. In the fourth stage the crushed strips are sent for making a liquid pulp. When the pulp is ready it got filtered in a machine for separation of long fibres from a liquid gel.
In the sixth stage, water is added with amino acid for the softening of fibres. Thereafter, the spun is being rolled to make yarn. Following this the fabric is ready for weaving the clothes such as socks and shirt and in the end the end product is ready for selling in a market for a business.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having nine stages and describe its broad progression from planting bamboo to producing fabric and clothing. Several key stages are included, such as harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering and softening. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram specifies amine oxide, not “amino acid,” and the final stage shows finished clothing rather than products being prepared for sale. The overview also says the process “ends with the manufacturing of socks and shirt,” which is imprecise, and the account does not clearly distinguish spinning yarn from weaving fabric. To strengthen the report, give a concise overview of the main phases and describe each stage accurately, without adding unsupported information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response follows the process in the correct general order, and sequencing expressions such as “The process starts,” “In the sixth stage,” and “Thereafter” help the reader track the stages. The paragraphing is limited, however: the overview and detailed account are not clearly separated, and the long process description would be easier to follow if grouped into stages such as cultivation and preparation, fibre treatment, and fabric production. Some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly “after that” and “Following this,” while the final sentence combines weaving, clothing production and selling without a clear relationship. Use a separate overview paragraph and more precise transitions to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “weaving,” which allows the reader to understand the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Bamboo tree” is less suitable than “bamboo plant,” “amino acid” misnames the chemical shown, and “the spun is being rolled” does not clearly express the spinning stage. Phrases such as “for a business” and “ready for selling in a market” are also awkward and introduce an unsupported commercial idea. Aim for precise process terms and natural collocations, for example “spin the fibres into yarn” and “weave the yarn into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect stages in longer sentences, using forms such as “When the pulp is ready” and “after that,” but control is inconsistent. Errors include “the process contains nine stages, starting … and ends,” where the verb forms do not match, and “the harvested crop is sends,” which has an incorrect passive construction. Other problems include “it got filtered,” “water is added with,” and “the spun is being rolled.” Articles, agreement and punctuation also need attention: “a bamboo plant,” “a shirt,” and spaces after commas would improve accuracy. Practise forming consistent present-simple passives for process descriptions, such as “the strips are crushed” and “the fibres are softened,” and check each sentence for complete, correctly linked clauses.
