IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates about the fabrics is manufactured from the bamboo. Overall, there are total 9 steps that make fabrics from bamboo.
Firstly, to plant bamboo plants in spring and than harvest the bamboo plants in autumn. Furthermore, after that it cuts into strips and dip them in the water and amine oxide to make them soften fibers. Separate the long fibers from liquid called filter and than it converts into make fiber type collection from bamboo.
In addition, to crush the strips (to make liquid pulp) and spin that's called to make yam and than to make fiber (weave). At last the fiber is ready from bamboo.
In contrast, to make bamboo fiber from bamboo in just 9 steps. These steps are very easy to make bamboo fiber.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the process as having nine steps and mention the seasonal planting and harvesting, which are relevant features. However, the account is incomplete and several stages are misplaced or unclear: the strips are crushed to make pulp before filtering, and the fibres are softened with water and amine oxide after filtering. Your description instead says to dip the strips before crushing, and does not clearly report the final sequence of spinning yarn, weaving fabric, and producing clothing. The overview that the steps are “very easy” is not supported by the diagram. The response is also 21 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail you can provide. Cover the stages in order and give a factual overview of the process from growing bamboo to finished garments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response into paragraphs, and words such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “At last” signal sequence. However, the progression is difficult to follow because stages are presented out of order and some links between them are unclear. For example, “In addition” introduces crushing after filtering and softening have already been mentioned, while “In contrast” does not introduce a comparison. Several ideas are joined into long, loosely connected sentences, making it hard to see where one stage ends and the next begins. Use one paragraph for an overview and another for the ordered stages, with clear sequencing language such as “Next,” “After this,” and “Finally.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “harvest,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibers,” and “weave,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes obscures the process. “Yam” appears to be a misspelling of “yarn,” and “fiber type collection” does not clearly describe the long fibres separated from the liquid. “Make fabrics” and “make bamboo fiber” are also repeated rather than using more precise process terms. Build a small set of accurate verbs and nouns for each stage—such as crush, filter, soften, spin, yarn, and fabric—and check spelling and natural word combinations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe a sequence using both simple clauses and longer sentences, but control is inconsistent. The opening, “The diagram illustrates about the fabrics is manufactured,” has an incorrect clause structure, and “there are total 9 steps” is missing an article. Verb forms and subjects are also unclear in phrases such as “after that it cuts into strips” and “than it converts into make.” Several sentences are fragments or lack a clear subject, which makes relationships between actions difficult to understand. Practise using a consistent present simple passive for process descriptions—for example, “The bamboo is cut into strips”—and make each sentence express one or two clearly connected stages.
