IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The presented diagram demonstrates procedure of fabric making from bamboo in nine steps.

The procedure starts with planting the bamboo plants around spring season. They are then harvested in autumn, and cut them into strips with sharp bladder machine. The further procedure inolved crushing these bamboo pieces to give them the shape of yarn. Therefore, To make liquid pulp the strips are crushed, and then filtered to seprate the long fibres from liquid. To soften the fibres, water and amine oxide are added. The fibres then spin to make yarn and in the last step the yarn is weaved to make fabric and the fabric is then used to make various type of clothes.

This diagram has mentioned each and every detail, from planting and harvesting the bamboo tree in specific time of the year, to reaching the final step of weaving to make fabric after five most importants steps ahead.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine steps and include the key stages from seasonal planting and harvesting through to fabric and clothing. The details about filtering the fibres and adding water and amine oxide are also relevant. However, some information is inaccurate or unclear: crushing produces liquid pulp, not yarn, and the phrase “sharp bladder machine” does not match the diagram’s circular saw. The overview is also weak: the final paragraph says the diagram includes “each and every detail” rather than summarising the main transformation from bamboo to finished garments. Develop a clearer overview and describe each stage precisely, avoiding repetition of the crushing step.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows the process in broadly chronological order, and linking expressions such as “They are then,” “Therefore,” and “The fibres then” help the reader follow the sequence. This gives the account a coherent overall arrangement. However, the progression is weakened by repeating the crushing stage: it is first described as shaping the pieces into yarn, then explained again as producing liquid pulp. “Therefore” does not clearly express the relationship between those sentences, and the final paragraph repeats earlier information instead of adding a concise overview. Organise the response into a brief introduction and overview followed by a clearly sequenced description, using transitions only where they accurately show the process.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” and “weaved,” so the reader can understand much of the manufacturing sequence. There is some useful topic-specific language, but word choice and spelling are not consistently controlled. “Sharp bladder machine” is an inaccurate description of the cutting equipment, while “shape of yarn” misrepresents the crushing stage. Errors such as “inolved,” “seprate,” and “importants” are noticeable, and “various type of clothes” is imprecise. Aim for accurate collocations and forms, such as “cut with a circular saw,” “crushed into liquid pulp,” and “various types of clothing.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including linked clauses such as “They are then harvested in autumn, and cut them into strips” and the sequence “To soften the fibres, water and amine oxide are added.” The passive construction is appropriate for describing a process. However, some grammatical errors reduce accuracy: “and cut them” has an unclear subject and should be “and are cut,” while “the fibres then spin” needs a passive form, “are then spun.” There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “procedure of fabric making” and “various type of clothes.” Use consistent passive forms throughout and check that subjects, verbs, and plural nouns agree.
