IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The illsustrated diagram represents the process of formation of fabric from bamboo plants. The process is long and takes around a year to form end product. It starts when bamboo plants are planted in season of spring and after they grow sufficiently they are harvested in autumn season. After harvesting, they are passed through a strong blade to cut the extra branches and leaves attached with them and give them a shape of a strip. Then this strip is crushed further to extract liquid pulm from inside it. After that the liquid pulp passes through filtration process and long fibres are separated from it. Water and amine oxide are added to there fibres to make them soft. The soft fibres are spinned to give them a shape of yarn. The yarn produced is woven forming a proper shape of fabric. This fabric is then utilized in making various clothing items such as T shirts, socks, dresses probably those kind of items which people use in winter season to keep them warm and protect them from cold.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover the main sequence from planting in spring and harvesting in autumn through processing the fibres, spinning yarn and weaving fabric. The final use for clothing is also relevant. However, the account is not fully accurate: the diagram shows bamboo being cut into strips, but does not mention removing branches or leaves, and it shows the finished fabric becoming clothing without specifying dresses or winter use. The claim that the process takes “around a year” is not supported by the diagram. There is also no concise overview identifying the broad stages, such as cultivation, fibre processing and fabric production. To strengthen the response, report only what is shown and summarise the process as a whole before describing its stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The stages are generally presented in the correct order, and linking phrases such as “After harvesting,” “Then,” and “After that” help the reader follow the process. However, the response is one continuous paragraph, so the overview and detailed sequence are not clearly distinguished. Some connections are also awkward or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Then” and “After that.” The final sentence adds several speculative examples, which weakens the progression from the manufacturing process to its outcome. Organise the response into a brief introductory overview and a paragraph describing the stages, and use a wider but controlled range of sequencing expressions. Clearer links between each material’s state—strips, pulp, fibres, yarn and fabric—would also improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “filtration,” “fibres,” “yarn” and “woven,” which allows the main steps to be understood. However, several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “formation of fabric” is less natural than “production of fabric,” “liquid pulm” is misspelled, and “spinned” is not the correct form of “spin.” “Strong blade” is vague compared with the diagram’s cutting step, while “proper shape of fabric” is an imprecise description of weaving. The speculative phrase “those kind of items” is also informal and unclear. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling and word forms; for example, use “liquid pulp,” “spun into yarn” and “woven into fabric.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple and complex sentences, with some effective sequencing clauses, such as “After harvesting…” and “Water and amine oxide are added…”. However, errors occur in sentence structure and grammatical forms. In “after they grow sufficiently they are harvested,” a comma is needed after the introductory clause, and “they” has an unclear reference. “The soft fibres are spinned” contains an incorrect verb form; the passive should be “are spun.” In “added to there fibres,” the possessive form “their” is required. The final sentence also has an awkward construction: “This fabric is then utilized in making…” would be clearer as “The fabric is then used to make…”. Use passive forms consistently for process descriptions and proofread pronouns, verb forms and punctuation.
