IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates a sequential process of creating fabric from bamboo.

Overall, the process of making the product is done in nine steps. Additionallty, the required bamboos are selected and harvested which eventually go through a chemical process to turn them into fabric.

Initially, during first and second steps, bamboo plants are selcted then harvested in autumn by the cloth makers. In the third stage, those bamboos are cut into thinner strips using machines. Moving forward, those strips are crushed into liquid pulp which is the fourth stage of the process. Afterward, the liquid pulp is filtered, which is a crucial step to separatelong fibres from liquid.

At the sixth step, chemical procedure for softening the fibres occur where water is added along with amine oxide. Furthermore, the soften fabric is spinned to make yarns, Numerous yarns are woven together to make fabric. At the last stage, various types of clothes like t-shirt and socks are manufactured.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the full process and give a clear overview, noting that it has nine stages and that bamboo undergoes processing before becoming fabric. The sequence from harvesting through crushing, filtering and softening to yarn, fabric and clothing is mostly accurate. This meets the task well, with some features already clearly selected and reported. However, the overview could identify the main transformation more precisely, and a few details are unclear or not fully supported: bamboo is planted in spring, rather than simply “selected,” and the diagram shows harvesting in autumn but does not identify the workers as “cloth makers.” The final clothing stage is reported accurately. To strengthen the response further, make the seasonal stages explicit and describe the progression from raw bamboo to finished garments more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence, with an opening overview followed by stages in process order. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “In the third stage,” “Moving forward,” and “At the last stage” help the reader follow the diagram. The paragraphing also separates the overview from the detailed account. Some links are less smooth or precise: “Furthermore” does not clearly express the relationship between softening and spinning, and the transition from yarn to weaving would benefit from a more explicit connector. There is also a punctuation break in “yarns, Numerous yarns,” which interrupts the flow. Use a full stop there and vary transitions to show the actual sequence and cause-and-effect relationships more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “filtered,” “fibres,” “pulp,” and “woven,” which makes the stages understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “chemical process” and “amine oxide.” However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward: “selected” does not describe planting, “the soften fabric” should refer to softened fibres, and “spinned” is not the correct form of “spin.” “Thinner strips” is also less precise than simply “strips.” Spelling slips such as “Additionallty,” “selcted,” and “separatelong” reduce accuracy. Check spelling carefully and choose terms that match the material at each stage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the clause “which is a crucial step to separate…” The process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors persist. For example, “during first and second steps” needs articles, and “chemical procedure … occur” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “the soften fabric is spinned,” the verb construction is inaccurate; the sentence also shifts from fibres to fabric before the diagram indicates fabric is made. Punctuation needs attention in “yarns, Numerous yarns,” where a comma joins two independent sentences. Review articles, agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries, while retaining the clear chronological structure.
