IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The picture illustrates how natural clothings are made from bamboo.
Overall, it is a 9 step process starting from planting bamboo in one season and then given a specific shape through cutting machines and cleaned and at last turned into fine wearables.
The process starts from planting bamboo plants in the season of spring and then harvested in autumn. These bamboo plants are then cut into long strips but a sharp blade in one go. After they are cut into piece they are then crushed to extract the liquid pulp in it. These lengthy sticks and passed through filters which seperates bamboo fibres from the liquid.
These filtered fibers are then added into water along with amino oxide which helps in softening its strings. These strings are spun in a round shaped ball and once complete it is known as yarn. These yarns are then weaven into specific types of fabrics according to people needs like shirts or socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover the main stages and give a clear overall account of the process, including the seasonal planting and harvesting, the conversion of bamboo into pulp and fibres, and the final production of fabric and clothing. The sequence is mostly accurate, and the overview identifies the process as having nine steps. However, some details are less fully or precisely reported: the diagram says the fibres are softened with water and amine oxide, while “amino oxide” is inaccurate, and the final step shows finished clothing rather than explaining that fabric is made “according to people needs.” The overview could also distinguish the mechanical processing stages from the later spinning and weaving more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged in a sensible sequence, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs that follow the stages from cultivation to finished products. Sequencing phrases such as “The process starts,” “After they are cut,” and “These filtered fibers are then” help the reader follow the process. However, some links are mechanical, and a few references are unclear: “These lengthy sticks” appears to refer to the bamboo strips, while “its strings” shifts the description to fibres without a clear transition. The overview also compresses several stages into a vague phrase. To improve progression, use clearer references to each material as it changes and group the stages into distinct growing, processing and manufacturing phases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “crushed,” “liquid pulp,” “filters,” “fibres,” “spun” and “yarn,” which allows you to describe the main transformations. There is also some attempt at more specific wording, such as “extract” and “softening.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “natural clothings” should be “natural clothing” or “fabric,” “fine wearables” is vague, and “weaven” is not the correct form of “weave.” “Amino oxide” also misnames the chemical shown. Spelling errors such as “seperates” and imprecise phrases such as “in one go” reduce control. Aim for standard process collocations and check word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including clauses linked with “which” and “once,” and the stages remain understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur. For example, “These lengthy sticks and passed through filters” needs the passive verb “are passed,” while “After they are cut into piece” requires the plural “pieces.” The phrase “then given a specific shape” lacks a clear subject and verb structure, and “according to people needs” needs a possessive form. There are also tense and agreement inconsistencies in descriptions of the process. Improve accuracy by checking that each sentence has a complete verb phrase, that passive forms are correctly formed, and that singular and plural nouns agree with their determiners.
