IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The information about the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo is showed by thr line graph.

Overall, this process is a linear process chart. It consists of nine steps, begins with planting bamboo plants and end on ready clothes.

It can be clearly seen that, in the initial stage, bamboo plants are planted in spring season and harvested in autumn. In the second stage, bamboo trees are cut into strips afterwards strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. In the following stage, long fibers are seprated from liquid with the help of filter.

Moving towards the remaining details, in upcoming stage long fibers are softened by adding water and amine oxide. Later soften fibers are converted into yarn by spun, subsequently, yarn is weave to make fabric. In the last stage clothes are ready to wear.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having nine steps and give a relevant overview, from planting bamboo to finished clothing. The main stages are mostly reported in the correct order, including harvesting in autumn, crushing the strips into pulp, filtering, softening the fibres, spinning yarn and weaving fabric. However, the account is brief and some details are unclear or imprecise: the final stage is clothing items, rather than simply clothes being “ready to wear,” and the description does not clearly distinguish the full sequence of processing from the growing and harvesting stages. The response also falls 14 words short of the required minimum, limiting the detail provided. To strengthen coverage, describe the final products explicitly and add a little more precise information about the stages shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the early stages and then the remaining processing steps. Sequencing expressions such as “In the initial stage,” “In the following stage,” and “Later” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account coherent progression, although some linking is mechanical and the paragraphing could be more purposeful. For example, “Moving towards the remaining details” is an awkward transition, while “In the second stage” is confusing because it introduces cutting, which is the third numbered step. Use transitions that reflect the actual sequence, and group the stages into clear phases, such as cultivation, fibre processing, and fabric production.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “filter,” “fibers,” and “yarn,” so the topic is generally clear. However, several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “showed by thr line graph” and “converted into yarn by spun.” There are also spelling errors in “seprated” and inconsistent spelling of “fibers/fibres.” The phrase “linear process chart” is understandable but less natural than “linear process” or “production process.” These issues keep the vocabulary from being consistently precise. Aim to use accurate process collocations and check spelling and word forms, especially when describing how materials change from one stage to another.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “long fibers are separated from liquid with the help of filter” and a sequence of actions linked with “afterwards.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but there are some errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “is showed” should be “is shown,” “begins with planting … and end” needs parallel verb forms, and “yarn is weave” should be “yarn is woven.” The opening sentence also has an unclear structure, and “In the last stage clothes are ready to wear” would benefit from an article and clearer punctuation. Practise passive forms and parallel structures, which are especially useful for process descriptions.
