IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the process of converting a bamboo plant to yarn which is then used to make clothes. It mainly includes four to five steps from irrigating, harvesting, cutting, filtration and the weaving of the cloth.
The first step is to grow a bamboo plant which is particullarly grown in the spring season and is harvested in the autumn season when it is fully grown .The third step is to cut the bamboo plant into small strips ,so it can be easily crush to make their liquid. The strips is then coverted into liquid pulp. The fourth step is to filter all the long fibres from liquid in order to make it useful fabric.
In order to make our fabric softer and useful we need to add water and amine oxide in the fabrics. The fabric is finally coverted into threads which are used for clothes.
In order to sale it in the markets we need to spin the whole thread into a circle so people can use it easily to make yarns. The final step includes weaving of fabric in order to make the desired clothes which is demanded by the consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the broad process, including seasonal planting and harvesting, cutting, processing fibres, spinning and weaving. However, the account only partially reports the diagram and contains several important inaccuracies or omissions. The overview says there are “four to five steps,” although the process has nine, and it introduces “irrigating,” which is not shown. The sequence is also confused: filtering occurs before softening, spinning produces yarn, and the final stage shows clothing made from the fabric. Instead, the response suggests the fabric is converted into threads and adds an unsupported explanation about selling it in markets. To improve, give a concise overview of the full sequence, then describe each stage in the correct order using only information shown.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic chronological structure, moving from growing bamboo towards fabric and clothing, and paragraph breaks provide some separation. However, progression is not consistently clear because the stages are misnumbered and some are repeated or placed out of order. For example, filtering is called the “fourth step,” while spinning and making yarn are described in a confusing sequence. Linking phrases such as “The first step,” “The third step,” and “The final step” help signal stages, but the numbering does not reliably guide the reader. The opening overview also does not prepare the reader for the full process. Organise the body into clear stages in diagram order and use accurate transitions such as “Next,” “After filtering,” and “Finally.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “harvested,” “strips,” “liquid pulp,” “fibres,” “spin,” and “weaving,” which helps communicate the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this diagram. “Irrigating” is not a stage shown, “make it useful fabric” is unclear, and “sale it in the markets” introduces an irrelevant purpose. There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “particullarly,” “coverted,” and “crush.” Aim for precise process terms and natural collocations, such as “soften the fibres” and “spin them into yarn.” Check spelling and avoid adding details that are not supported by the visual.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a purpose clause in “so it can be easily crush to make their liquid.” However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and punctuation are frequent enough to make some relationships between stages unclear. Examples include “can be easily crush” instead of a passive form such as “can be crushed,” “The strips is,” and “when it is fully grown,” where the reference shifts between plural strips and the bamboo plant. Several sentences also run together without appropriate spacing or punctuation, as in the opening description of the stages. Use consistent present simple or passive constructions for process descriptions, check subject–verb agreement, and divide long sentences into clearer units.
